The purpose of this study was to elucidate the factors associated with hyperuricemia in obese children and early adolescents and to investigate the threshold serum level of uric acid (UA) for the metabolic syndrome in children.
Methods: We assessed anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, body composition and biochemical data in 1,559 obese children.
Background: The hand-assisted technique enables the rapid extraction of the graft, shortening the warm ischemia time (WIT), and the retroperitoneoscopic approach is potentially associated with a less incidence of postoperative ileus in donor nephrectomy for living kidney transplantation. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of retroperitoneoscopic donor nephrectomy with a gel-sealed hand-assist access device (GelPort), which is a wound sealing device that permits the access of the hand to the surgical field, free trocar site choice within it, and rapid conversion to open surgery if necessary, while preserving the pneumoperitoneum/pneumoretroperitoneum.
Methods: Seventy-five consecutive donors receiving this procedure were retrospectively studied.
The acquired mutation (V617F) of Janus kinase 2 (JAK2) is observed in the majority of patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). In the screening of genes whose expression was induced by JAK2 (V617F), we found the significant induction of c-Myc mRNA expression mediated by STAT5 activation. Interestingly, GSK-3β was inactivated in transformed Ba/F3 cells by JAK2 (V617F), and this enhanced the protein expression of c-Myc.

Sisomicin with an unsaturated sugar ring I displays better antibacterial activity than other structurally related aminoglycosides, such as gentamicin, tobramycin, and amikacin. In the present study, we have confirmed by X-ray analyses that the binding mode of sisomicin is basically similar but not identical to that of the related compounds having saturated ring I. A remarkable difference is found in the stacking interaction between ring I and G1491.

Purified recombinant SadA had catalytic activity towards several N-substituted l-amino acids, which was especially strong with N-succinyl l-leucine. With the NMR and LC-MS analysis, SadA converted N-succinyl l-leucine into N-succinyl l-threo-β-hydroxyleucine with >99% diastereoselectivity.

SadA was expressed in Escherichia coli, purified and crystallized using the sitting-drop vapour-diffusion method at 293 K. Crystals of selenomethionine-substituted SadA were obtained using a reservoir solution containing PEG 3000 as the precipitant at pH 9.

In our study, the in vitro T cell proliferation and the production of Th1 cytokines were significantly lower in cell cultures from NMO patients, as compared with healthy individuals.
