Lumbar-pelvic coordination in the sitting position.

This study assessed the relationship of each movement direction on the lumbar spine and on the pelvis in regards to lumbar-pelvic coordination in the sitting position. Lumbar and pelvic motions were recorded using a flexible electrogoniometer in 12 healthy subjects during two different tasks in the sitting position. The coordination of the lumbar spine and pelvis was evaluated using the ratio of lumbar and pelvic angles (L/P ratio hereafter) in three motion phases.

Cardiovascular toxicity of cryopreserved cord blood cell infusion.

Although infusion of cryopreserved bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cell is associated with a variety of symptoms, there have been no reports detailing the data of infusion-related toxicities of cryopreserved cord blood (CB) units. We prospectively evaluated the incidence and significance of infusion-related toxicities in 34 adult patients undergoing unrelated CB transplantation. Cryopreserved CB units were thawed and immediately infused, unfiltered, through a central intravenous catheter without further manipulation.

Superior performance in WAIS-R block design among top-level rugby players.

Objective And Design: Following a report that a well-known soccer player achieved a perfect score on the Block Design subtest of WAIS-R, WAIS-R was conducted on 31 skilled rugby players.

Participants: Twenty-seven of the 31 players were recruited for further analyses.

Results: In 14 of 27 players, Block Design scores were the highest of the 11 subtests.

Impact of cytomegalovirus serostatus on outcome of unrelated cord blood transplantation for adults: a single-institute experience in Japan.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease is one of the major infectious complications after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (SCT). Several studies have shown that CMV-seropositive patients have a substantial survival disadvantage after bone marrow transplantation (BMT) or peripheral blood SCT (PBSCT). Between August 1998 and February 2006, 101 adult patients underwent myeloablative cord blood transplantation (CBT) from unrelated donors at our institution.

Impact of miniaturization of cardiopulmonary bypass circuit on blood transfusion requirement in neonatal open-heart surgery.

This study was undertaken to determine the impact of miniaturization of a cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) circuit on blood transfusion and hemodynamics in neonatal open-heart surgery. Neonates (n = 102) undergoing open-heart surgery between 2002 and 2006 were included and divided into three groups: group 1 (n = 28), Dideco 902 oxygenator + 5/16" line; group 2 (n = 29), Dideco 901 oxygenator + 1/4" line; group3 (n = 45), Dideco 901 oxygenator + 3/16" arterial + 1/4" venous line. Amount of priming volume, blood and bicarbonate sodium use during CPB, and hemodynamics were compared.

Continuous drip infusion of low dose cytarabine and etoposide with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor for elderly patients with acute myeloid leukaemia ineligible for intensive chemotherapy.

Backgrounds And Objectives: The optimal strategy for the management of elderly patients with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is still controversial. We previously reported the effectiveness of low dose cytarabine (Ara-C) and etoposide (VP-16) (AV therapy) for those elderly AML patients ineligible for intensive chemotherapy. We initiated the present feasibility study to improve the efficacy by using glanulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) with AV therapy (AVG therapy).

Living-donor lobar lung transplantation for pulmonary arterial hypertension after failure of epoprostenol therapy.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term effects of living-donor lobar lung transplantation (LDLLT) for critically ill patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) who failed in epoprostenol treatment.

Background: Although continuous epoprostenol infusion has markedly improved survival in patients with PAH, some patients do not benefit from this therapy.

Methods: From July 1998 to December 2003, 28 consecutive PAH patients who were treated with epoprostenol and accepted as candidates for lung transplantation were enrolled.

A phase II study of a THP-COP regimen for the treatment of elderly patients aged 70 years or older with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.

Pirarubicin (tetrahydropyranyl adriamycin: THP) is an anthracycline drug that reportedly has fewer cardiotoxic effects than doxorubicin. A phase II study was conducted in order to determine the efficacy of a treatment regimen incorporating THP, namely THP-COP in the treatment of elderly patients aged 70 years or older with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). The treatment regimens for Group A (aged 70-79 years, n = 45) and Group B (aged 80 years or older, n = 16) consisted of cyclophosphamide, THP, vincristine, and prednisolone, repeated six times, every 3 weeks.

Therapeutic strategy of untreated de novo acute myeloid leukemia in the elderly: the efficacy of continuous drip infusion with low dose cytarabine and etoposide.

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a novel low dose chemotherapy as a remission induction regimen for elderly de novo AML patients ineligible for intensive chemotherapy.

Method: Fifty consecutive patients, aged 60 to 85, with untreated de novo AML were enrolled. Patients with poor PS or defined non-hematological complications were given continuous drip infusion of low dose cytarabine (Ara-C), 20 mg/body and etoposide (VP-16), 50 mg/body for 10 days (AV group).

Successful intra-postoperative extracorporeal circulatory support with atrial communication for treatment of anomalous left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery: a case report.

We describe a successful case of surgical treatment for anomalous left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery (ALCAPA) syndrome with severe left ventricular dysfunction. Because of the severe left ventricular dysfunction, we planned to use an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for heart support until a satisfactory recovery had been established. The left ventricular function significantly recovered in a few days, and the patient could be discharged without any complications.

Comparative cytogenetic analyses were carried out in six species of Brachycephalidae from southeastern Brazil. Continuous cerebral and myocardial perfusion during aortic arch repair in neonates and infants.

To minimize myocardial ischemia, we repaired aortic arch obstruction with ventricular septal defect, using two different techniques of cerebral and myocardial perfusion. Seventy-one infants, ages 3 to 137 days, underwent primary repair of coarctation of the aorta (n = 49)/interruption of the aortic arch (n = 22) with ventricular septal defect. In 65 patients, an end-to-end arch anastomosis was performed with cerebral and myocardial perfusion through the innominate or the ascending arterial cannula (non-working beating heart: NWBH).

Vibronic structure in the S1-S0 transition of jet-cooled dibenzofuran.

Fluorescence excitation spectra of dibenzofuran in a supersonic jet are observed and the vibronic structure is analyzed for the S(1) (1)A(1) (pipi) and S(0) states. Background: Recently investigators have worked to identify prognostic factors in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) so an appropriate therapeutic plan can be put in action. The aim of the present study was to assess the prognostic significance of serum soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor (sTNF-R) 2 in aggressive NHL.

Methods: One hundred and ten consecutive patients with aggressive NHL who were previously untreated (diffuse large B-cell lymphoma; 94, peripheral T-cell lymphoma; 16) were prospectively enrolled in this study between 1997 and 2002.

To facilitate more economical medical care, we carried out a prospective study of whether a THP-COP regimen (cyclophosphamide, pirarubicin, vincristine, and prednisolone) with low-dose granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) would effectively treat non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). From April 2003 through March 2004, we enrolled 19 consecutive patients with newly diagnosed NHL treated at our hospital. The patients were divided into young and elderly groups.

Fas and Fas ligand expression on germinal center type-diffuse large B-cell lymphoma is associated with the clinical outcome.

In recent years, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) has been classified by DNA microarray analysis into the germinal center B-cell-like (GC) type, the activated B-cell-like (ABC) type and type 3. The latter two types can be collectively categorized as the non-GC (NGC) type. From the prognostic perspective, the GC type has a favorable clinical outcome when compared with the NGC type.
