[Calculation of intraocular lens power in non-standard clinical situations].

Methods of intraocular lens (IOL) calculation in non-standard clinical situations have been developed and introduced. These include a formula that improves the calculation accuracy in patients with relatively short anterior-posterior axis and another method for eyes after previous radial keratotomy. A comparative clinical evaluation of the proposed methods has been performed.

[Preferred distances between DNA binding sites for factors regulating transcription initiation].

Transcriptional regulation of gene expression in higher eukaryotes is driven by sophisticated protein complexes of transcription factors. On the DNA level, there are composite elements containing sites of different DNA-binding proteins. We use the hypoxia-response system to identify preferred localization distances for the 'hypoxia-induced factor-1 binding site-co-factor binding site" pairs in promoter DNA regions of the human genome.

[Intracellular tetanization by the hyperpolarizing current potentiates synapses formed by mossy fibers on the pyramidal cells of the CA3 hyppocampal area of the rat].

Whole-cell recordings of excitatory postsynaptic potentials evoked by the minimum stimulation of mossy fiber inputs were performed in CA3pyramidal neurons in rat hippocampal slices. Paired responses were recorded before and after intracellular hyperpolarization tetanization. This procedure produced an increase in excitatory postsynaptic potentials at least for 20-min recording period.

[A comparative evaluation of astigmatic neutrality of 5 mm self-sealing tunnel incision of different types].

[Study of giant depolarizing activity in the neonatal hippocampal neurones].

Spontaneous oscillatory activity is a general feature of developing neural networks. Early in postnatal development, spontaneous network-driven events, termed giant depolarizing potentials (GDPs), occur synchronously over the entire hippocampus. By performing simulation of hippocampal network with using physiology parameters of the neurons and its network from the present experiments and literature dates, we investigated the participation of the different components of network in the generation of GDPs.

[Study of synaptic plasticity of hippocampal CA3 area as a result of tetanization of perforant path].

Evoked responses in CA3 area to the mossy fibers stimulation were studied after low and high frequency tetanizations of the perforant path. Stimulations of perforant path with 10 and 100 Hz frequencies inducted depression testing through the same path. Subthreshold for potentiation of the mossy fibers inputs to the CA3 tetanization of the perforant path with 10 Hz frequency transformed to threshold one after previous tetanization of the perforant path with 100 Hz frequency.

[Modulating influence of adenosine triphosphate on the oscillating properties of hippocampal neurons during early ontogenesis].

Extracellular ATP was used to test the involvement of purinergic P2 receptors in the modulation of GAB Aergic giant depolarizing potentials (GDPs) in rat neonatal hippocampus. Bath application of ATP reduced the GDP frequency in a concentration-dependent manner. The inhibitory effect of ATP persisted in the presence of adenosine P1 receptor antagonist DPCPX indicating the action of ATP on GDPs.

[Possibilities of prophylaxis of the induced "suture" astigmatism in cataract extraction].

Due to a number of reasons, the traditional methods of cataract extraction, i.e. through 8-12 mm limbic incisions, are still widely used in the clinical practice.

[Intravascular photohemotherapy in the complex prophylaxis of purulent-septic complications after coronary shunting].

The article presents results of treatment of 78 patients with the history of coronary bypass operations for ischemic heart disease. There were 48 patients with high risk factors of the development of pyo-septic complications. Among them there were 27 patients treated by complex postoperative therapy including intravascular photomodification of blood.

[General status of patients before dental treatment].

Arterial pressure (AP), heart rate, and stress index (estimated by ECG) were measured in 20 patients several minutes before dental treatment. Systolic AP was normal in 56% patients (mainly elderly), diastolic was normal in 50.5% and increased in 36% (particularly so in elderly patients).

[Long-term potentiation of AMPA- and NMDA-components of minimal postsynaptic currents in CA1 area of the rat hippocampus].

Excitatory postsynaptic currents (EPSC) were recorded from pyramidal neurons of the rat hippocampal slices as well as the AMPA and NMDA components. A strong enough correlation between the amplitudes of the components provided a reliable evidence of their generation by the same synapse. Both components revealed similar LTP following afferent tetanisation.

[Nucleoprotein complexes of yeast and their biological effect on T-lymphocytes].

Complexes of nucleic acids and acid nuclear proteins that are active toward human T-lymphocytes were isolated from cells of bakers' yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The conditions of isolation of nucleoprotein complexes by acid extraction followed by microfiltration for concentration of macromolecular components were optimized. Gel filtration and electrophoresis were used to study the composition and molecular weights of components of the preparations obtained.

[Reverberation of excitation in "hippocampus-entorhinal cortex" slices in rats. Optical recording].

Using RH155 voltage-sensitive dye and photodiode array for optical recording, responses to electrical stimuli were investigated in rat brain slices, which included hippocampus and entorhinal cortex. It was shown that single electrical stimulation of the entorhinal cortex, subiculum, or dentate gyrus evoked a potential consecutively spreading from the dentate gyrus to the CA3 and then CA1 hippocampal areas. When the GABAergic inhibition was partially blocked by picrotoxin, the first excitation wave was followed by additional several waves.

[The generation of action potentials in the terminals of the Schaffer collaterals during long-term potentiation in the CA1 region of the hippocampus].

Experiments were performed in rat hippocampal slices. Activity of individual CA3 pyramidal neurons and field potentials in the CA1 areas were recorded extracellularly. The collision technique was applied to detect the antidromic origin of the background action potentials in the somata of CA3 neurons.

[Our experience with acycloguanosine treatment of herpes simplex].

A 5% ointment acycloguanosine was tried in the treatment of recurrent herpes simplex of the skin and genitalia in 48 patients. The treatment brought limitation of the process, relief of the symptoms, control of local manifestations and toxicity, accelerated epithelization, complete regression and disappearance of the eruption.

[The reactions of the upper respiratory pathways to low doses of ionizing radiation].

The state of upper respiratory tract, non-specific cell resistance and immune status were studied in persons who participated in liquidation of the Chernobyl APS disaster consequences. The prolonged influence of factors caused by small doses of ionizing irradiation leads to mucosa affection of upper respiratory tract, considerable reduction of phagocytic and antiviral activity of monocytes and worsening of the immune status of organism. The data obtained during researches explains the considerable increase of ARD among these persons.
