Salmonella is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in humans worldwide, and the infection with multidrug-resistant strains can cause severe diseases. Many coastal cities around the world discharge their wastewaters into the marine environment. These wastewaters contain a variety of pathogenic microorganisms that may have a role in the contamination of this ecosystem and have potential risks for public health.
