Article Synopsis
  • The Infectious Diseases Society of America made a new training program to help doctors learn about managing infections better.
  • They asked different hospitals and training programs how they used this new curriculum.
  • Many faced challenges like not having enough teachers, but they also found helpful ways to share the information, which led to creating guides for better teaching.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the mRNA-1273 vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 infection in young adults aged 18-29 who had never been infected or vaccinated before.
  • Over 1,149 participants received the vaccine, and the results showed a 52.6% efficacy against infection and 71.0% efficacy against symptomatic COVID-19, primarily due to the Delta variant.
  • Despite the positive findings, the incidence of infection was higher in a separate group that declined vaccination, indicating that other factors also played a role in infection risk.

Vibrio mimicus caused a seafood-associated outbreak in Florida, USA, in which 4 of 6 case-patients were hospitalized; 1 required intensive care for severe diarrhea. Strains were ctx-negative but carried genes for other virulence determinants (hemolysin, proteases, and types I-IV and VI secretion systems). Cholera toxin-negative bacterial strains can cause cholera-like disease.

Introduction: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common infections for which initial antibiotic treatment decisions are empirically based, often without antibiotic susceptibility testing to evaluate resistance, increasing the risk of inappropriate therapy. We hypothesized that models based on electronic health records (EHR) could assist in the identification of patients at higher risk for antibiotic-resistant UTIs and help guide the selection of antimicrobials in hospital and clinic settings.

Methods: EHR from multiple centers in North-Central Florida, including patient demographics, previous diagnoses, prescriptions, and antibiotic susceptibility tests, were obtained for 9990 patients diagnosed with a UTI during 2011-2019.

Importance: SARS-CoV-2 viral entry may disrupt angiotensin II (AII) homeostasis, contributing to COVID-19 induced lung injury. AII type 1 receptor blockade mitigates lung injury in preclinical models, although data in humans with COVID-19 remain mixed.

Objective: To test the efficacy of losartan to reduce lung injury in hospitalized patients with COVID-19.

Background: NDM-producing Enterobacteriaceae are a major clinical concern worldwide. We characterized NDM-positive pathogens isolated from patients and assessed the dissemination patterns of the genes in a hospital setting.

Methods: Eleven NDM-positive Enterobacteriaceae (three , six and two ) were isolated from nine patients over a 1 year period.

complex (Bcc) bacteria are opportunistic pathogens with high transmissibility and mortality. Here, we report the draft genome sequence of a Bcc strain isolated from a deep abscess culture in an immunocompetent patient with no relevant prior medical history.

A 50-year-old male presented with atrial flutter 25 days after heart and kidney transplantation. Rejection was excluded, but he developed severe COVID-19 infection with cardiac allograft dysfunction. Despite continued corticosteroid and tacrolimus therapy, he remained aviremic.

Purpose: To determine if an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) could be used to evaluate and monitor hand hygiene and personal protective equipment (PPE) proficiency for medical interns in the United States.

Methods: Interns in July 2015 (N=123, Cohort 1) without OSCE-based contact precaution evaluation and teaching were evaluated early 2016 by OSCE for hand hygiene and PPE proficiency. They performed poorly.

Objective: Recent evidence supports the use of ampicillin-sulbactam as a favored choice for antibiotic prophylaxis following head and neck free flap reconstructive surgery. However, there is a paucity of evidence guiding the optimal duration of antibiotic prophylaxis. The aim of this study is to compare the infection rates of short courses of ampicillin-sulbactam versus extended courses of various antibiotics in head and neck free flap reconstructive surgery.

is an opportunistic pathogen observed in nosocomial infections. Due to biofilm production and resistance to numerous antimicrobials, eradication is difficult. This study evaluated outcomes for monomicrobial infections.

A 52-year-old man presented to our hospital for further workup of fever of unknown origin after an extensive workup at an outside hospital had failed to reveal a diagnosis. At the outside hospital, he underwent excisional biopsy of the left supraclavicular lymph node, which showed non-necrotising granulomatous changes, and a bone marrow biopsy which showed a normocellular marrow. He was discharged without a diagnosis with recommendations to present to a tertiary hospital.
