The article discusses various options of anticoagulant therapy for pulmonary thromboembolism and the main criteria of medication choice including the use of unfractionated heparin, low-molecular-weight heparins, and rivaroxaban. The data presented are based on the own experience and results of international clinical trials.

Treatment of patients with aphakia and increased intraocular pressure by beta-blockers is sufficiently effective. Instillations of these agents decreases ophthalmic tone in patients with aphakia combined with primary glaucoma and in those with aphakic glaucoma. Intraocular pressure decreased in 70% patients and the effect persisted for at least 3 months in the majority of cases.

Ninety patients with aphakia and diabetes were examined. Intraocular pressure was normal in 30 patients, in 30 aphakia was concomitant with primary glaucoma, and 30 presented with aphakic glaucoma. Fundus oculi was examined with a slit lamp and +60 D lens, gonioscopy and cycloscopy were carried out using a contact prism proposed by the authors.

Intravascular irradiation of the blood with He-Ne laser at a wavelength 680 nm and 0.5 mWt power via Leukocyte light-guide introduced into one of the cubital veins was used in the treatment of patients with primary glaucoma. Treatment efficacy was assessed from changes in vision acuity, visual field, angioscotomas, blind spot, ophthalmic tone, and tonographic parameters.

Forty-eight patients with aphakia were examined to elucidate the effect of cataract extraction duration on subsequent development of Irwin-Hass syndrome. A total of 229 patients were examined 6 months and more after cataract extraction to find out whether sun light could induce development of dystrophic changes in the central retina in aphakia. The results indicate that operation duration of more than an hour increased the risk of subsequent development of Irwin-Hass syndrome.

The role of the endogenous convulsant kynurenine (K) in the mechanisms of the development of epileptic seizures in alcoholic persons was studied on a clinical material of 63 patients suffering from alcoholism with the presence on the EEG of paroxysmal alterations without epileptic fits (n = 28) and alcoholic epilepsy (n = 35), epileptic patients not abusing alcohol (n = 20), and practically healthy subjects (n = 10). There was a significant increase of the K concentration in alcoholic patients with paroxysmal disturbances on the EEG or convulsive seizures. That increase directly correlated with the rate of convulsive epileptic fits.

Examinations of 87 patients with different positions of the eyeball in the orbit have revealed that if the eyeball sinks even slightly deeper in the orbit than normally, collapse of the cornea is observed during cataract extraction and ciliary-choroid detachment develops during the postoperative period. If the eyeball protrudes forward no corneal collapse or ciliary-choroid detachment occur.

Complexes of DNA with synthetic N-terminal peptide of histone H4 (A-13) and with poly(Gly-Orn-Gly) in 0.015 M NaCl solution have been studied by means of viscometry, light scattering and circular dichroism. The process of intramolecular compactization begins to occur at a low content of poly(Gly-Orn-Gly) in complexes, while in the case of A-13 compactization takes place only when the content of A-13 in complexes attains 13--14%.

Among 233 patients with occlusion of the central retinal vein studied for 3 to 12 years 89 had no glaucoma, 77 had primary glaucoma alone and 67 had thrombotic glaucoma. In those with thrombotic glaucoma the intraocular pressure and its postural change in the affected eye never decreased and sometimes increased after the instillation of pilocarpine. Glaucoma secondary to occlusion of the central retinal vein always appeared suddenly.
