[Clinical features, diagnostics and treatment of FGF23 secreting tumors: series of 40 clinical cases].

Introduction: Tumor-induced osteomalacia is an acquired rare disease manifested by hypophosphatemic osteomalacia due to excessive secretion of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). FGF 23 is a non-classical hormone secreted by bone tissue (osteocytes) and regulates phosphorus metabolism.The aim of this work is to present clinical experience in the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of patients with tumor-induced osteomalacia.

Isolated giant aortic arch aneurysm repair in a 13-year-old girl: a case report.

Background: Aortic arch aneurysm is a very rare condition in children. Surgery is the life saving procedure but it performing might be challenging due to the complex anatomy.

Case Presentation: We describe a 13-year-old girl who was diagnosed to have an isolated giant aortic arch aneurysm.

Screening of Lesser-Known Salted-Dried Fish Species for Fatty Acids, Tocols, and Squalene.

The fillets and roes of 29 species of dry-salted fishes consumed in Eurasian countries were analyzed for fatty acids (FAs), tocols, and squalene, looking for derived health benefits. FAs were analyzed by GC-FID, and tocols and squalene were analyzed by HPLC-DAD. With some exceptions, docosahexaenoic (DHA, 22:6-3), eicosapentaenoic (EPA, 20:5-3), and arachidonic (ARA, 20:4-6) acids were the prominent polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs).

Rate-limiting hydrolysis in ribosomal release reactions revealed by ester activation.

Translation terminates by releasing the polypeptide chain in one of two chemical reactions catalyzed by the ribosome. Release is also a target for engineering, as readthrough of a stop codon enables incorporation of unnatural amino acids and treatment of genetic diseases. Hydrolysis of the ester bond of peptidyl-tRNA requires conformational changes of both a class I release factor (RF) protein and the peptidyl transferase center of a large subunit rRNA.

New Fluorescent Macrolide Derivatives for Studying Interactions of Antibiotics and Their Analogs with the Ribosomal Exit Tunnel.

Novel fluorescent derivatives of macrolide antibiotics related to tylosin bearing rhodamine, fluorescein, Alexa Fluor 488, BODIPY FL, and nitrobenzoxadiazole (NBD) residues were synthesized. The formation of complexes of these compounds with 70S E. coli ribosomes was studied by measuring the fluorescence polarization depending on the ribosome amount at constant concentration of the fluorescent substance.

Adolescent psychotherapy outcomes in community mental health: how do symptoms align with target complaints and perceived change?

This study examined the relationship between clinically significant symptom change (rated by youth and parents), severity of client-defined primary presenting problems (i.e., Target Complaints), and perceived change in therapy.

Ribosomal tunnel and translation regulation.

This review describes the results of recent studies of the ribosomal tunnel (RT), the major function of which is to allow the smooth passage of nascent polypeptides with different sequences from the peptidyl transferase center of the ribosome to the tunnel exit, where the folding of protein molecules begins. The features of structural organization of RT and their role in modulation and stabilization of the nascent chain conformation are discussed. Structural features of macrolide binding sites as well as application of macrolide antibiotics and their derivatives as tools to investigate ligand-tunnel wall interactions are also considered.

[Mistakes in diagnostics and treatment of soft tissue sarcomas].

120 patients with primary or recurrent soft tissue sarcomas were treated during 1995-2010 years. Analysis of clinical materials allowed singling out most frequent mistakes in diagnostics and treatment that had been made in 52 (43%) patients. High frequency of mistakes caused by rarity of disease, complexity in diagnostics and choice of adequate treatment tactics demands the necessity to concentrate these patients in medical institutions that specialize in treatment of soft tissue sarcomas.

[Surgical treatment of malignant tumors of the thoracic wall].

23 patients with malignant tumors of the thoracic wall, invading bone structures, were operated in the period of 2005-2009 years. Thoracic wall reconstruction was performed in 20 (77%) of patients. The type of the reconstruction was defined by tumor localization, volume of resection, anatomic features of transplantational tissue flaps.

Interplay between the ribosomal tunnel, nascent chain, and macrolides influences drug inhibition.

Accumulating evidence suggests that, during translation, nascent chains can form specific interactions with ribosomal exit tunnel to regulate translation and promote initial folding events. The clinically important macrolide antibiotics bind within the exit tunnel and inhibit translation by preventing progression of the nascent chain and inducing peptidyl-tRNA drop-off. Here, we have synthesized amino acid- and peptide-containing macrolides, which are used to demonstrate that distinct amino acids and peptides can establish interaction with components of the ribosomal tunnel and enhance the ribosome-binding and inhibitory properties of the macrolide drugs, consistent with the concept that the exit tunnel is not simply a Teflon-like channel.

[Amino acid and peptide derivatives of the tylosin family of macrolide antibiotics modified at the aldehyde group].

Fourteen new functionally active amino acid and peptide derivatives of the antibiotics tylosin, desmycosin, and 5-O-mycaminosyltylonolide were synthesized in order to study the interaction of the growing polypeptide chain with the ribosomal tunnel. The conjugation of various amino acids and peptides with a macrolide aldehyde group was carried out by two methods: direct reductive amination with the isolation of the intermediate Schiff bases or through binding via oxime using the preliminarily obtained derivatives of 2-aminooxyacetic acid.

Parent and adolescent satisfaction with mental health services: does it relate to youth diagnosis, age, gender, or treatment outcome?

Consumer satisfaction with treatment is important information for providers of mental health services. The goal of the current study was to examine the relationship between youth and parent satisfaction ratings and the following youth variables: gender, age, primary diagnosis, and changes in functioning and symptomatology after 6 months of services. Results demonstrated that in a large sample of youth receiving community mental health services satisfaction with services differed as a function of the adolescents' clinician-derived primary diagnosis, age, and reported changes in symptoms and functioning.

Clinically significant symptom change in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: does it correspond with reliable improvement in functioning?

This study examined the relation between clinically significant (CS) change in symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and reliable change in multiple domains of functioning in children who participated in the Multimodal Treatment Study of Children with ADHD. Children with CS change in symptoms were significantly more likely than children without CS change to have reliable change across five domains of functioning. Interestingly, however, depending on the measure of functioning, 14 to 52% of children who did not achieve CS change in symptoms showed reliable improvement in functional domains.

Models of case mix adjustment for Ohio Mental Health Consumer Outcomes among children and adolescents.

Outcome data collection systems provide the opportunity for comparing agencies, programs, and therapists. However, the political stakes of comparisons raise important issues regarding their perceived validity. The goal of case-mix adjustment is to eliminate potential biasing factors that might render comparisons as inappropriate or irrelevant.

When gold became considered as a precious metal for decorative purposes and later for coinage, attempts at producing imitations soon began to appear. There were two motives behind this activity: to make a metal that could pass as gold, and to quite openly imitate this precious metal for people who could not afford true gold. Imitation gold was produced by metallurgists, and later also by alchemists.

[Surgical treatment for pathologic fractures of long tubular bones in metastatic cancer].

Surgery for pathological fracture of long tubular bones associated with metastatic cancer was given to 77 patients (1993-2000): segmental resection with endoprosthetic replacement - 26; intramedullary osteosynthesis - 17; perosseous extrafocal osteosynthesis - 34. No intraoperative complication was reported. Infection-related postoperative complications, mainly in perosseous osteosynthesis, developed in 5 (7%).

European alchemy: some traditional beliefs.

Three important doctrines of European alchemy are discussed: the Emerald Table of Hermes, the idea of transmutation, and the Elixir of Life. The analysis of these problems is focused on the 16th century, the epoch of the high flourish of alchemy in Renaissance Europe. As typical examples two works are chosen: the treatises of Jean-Pierre Fabre (1588-1658) and Alexander von Suchten (? 1520 - ? 1590).
