Multiple myeloma (MM), a malignancy involving plasma cells, disproportionately affects older adults with an average age of diagnosis of about 70 years. Oftentimes, the therapies used in the treatment of MM are associated with a risk for immunotoxicity, lowering the ability of the immune system to fight off opportunistic infections. This is an important relationship for clinicians to realize as the incidence of opportunistic infections in myeloma patients is increasing.

Members of the superfamily of solute carrier (SLC) transmembrane proteins transport diverse substrates across distinct cellular membranes. Three SLC protein families transport distinct neurotransmitters into synaptic vesicles to enable synaptic transmission in the nervous system. Among them is the SLC17A6/7/8 family of vesicular glutamate transporters, which endows specific neuronal cell types with the ability to use glutamate as a neurotransmitter.

Lupus nephritis (LN) is a severe manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus; in LN class IV morphologic lesions may be similar to the lesions in primary membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN). The aim of the study was to compare the counts of tryptase-positive and chymase-positive mast cells between LN class IV and MPGN. The material consisted of 61 renal biopsies: 32 with lupus nephritis class IV, and 29 with membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis.

Systemic lupus erythematosus frequently involves the kidneys leading to significant morbidity and mortality. It is classified according to glomerular involvement pattern but tubulointerstitial lesions are also important for progression and prognosis, as seen in other kidney glomerular diseases. One of the cell types which participate in this process are mast cells.

In Western populations, roughly half of prostatic carcinoma (PC) cases show translocations involving the ETS transcription factor family genes and overexpression of the ERG transcription factor. ETS transcription factor family is known to be involved in angiogenesis. Microvascular density (MVD) influences the prognosis of various solid tumors, yet its significance in PC remains unclear.

The current treatment of breast cancer, the most frequent malignancy found in females, requires the study of biomarkers. The standard set of these includes at least an estrogen receptor, a progesterone receptor and a HER2 receptor, although many other factors have been shown to contribute to the prognosis. Tissue microarrays have been introduced to decrease costs and workload of immunohistochemistry applied to large collections of samples.

Prostatic carcinoma (PC) is one of the most frequent cancers in men. Molecular pathogenesis of PC remains poorly understood. Translocations involving ERG were found to be the single most frequent genetic event.

Mast cells are a component of cancer microenvironment the role of which is complex and poorly understood. Mast cells promote cancer growth by stimulation of neoangiogenesis, tissue remodeling and by modulation of the host immune response. The mediators of cancer promotion include protease-activated receptors, mitogen activated protein kinases, prostaglandins and histamine.
