Objective: Seizures with an aura of a "sensed presence," a religious emotion, or feelings of euphoria (ecstatic seizures) are characterized by heightened self-awareness. A previous case report on a patient with epilepsy and "sensed presence" as an aura described hypoperfusion in both temporal lobes and a local ictal increase in the left frontoparietal area. A reexamination of the data was suggested by a recent study of patients with ecstatic seizures, which proposed that hyperactivation of the left anterior insula might be a potential cause.

Vast numbers of insects and passerines achieve long-distance migrations between summer and winter locations by undertaking high-altitude nocturnal flights. Insects such as noctuid moths fly relatively slowly in relation to the surrounding air, with airspeeds approximately one-third of that of passerines. Thus, it has been widely assumed that windborne insect migrants will have comparatively little control over their migration speed and direction compared with migrant birds.

N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) is a thiol antioxidant that stimulates glutathione synthesis in cells. Several studies indicate that NAC possesses immunomodulatory properties in vitro, but both inhibitory and activating effects on immunity have been reported. We observed that allogeneic stem cell transplantation (ASCT) patients who were randomized to receive NAC 100  mg/kg/day (n=73) had an increased prevalence of grade II-V acute graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) compared to patients who did not receive NAC (n=87), indicating that NAC has an immunostimulatory effect in vivo.

Background: The threshold to secondary health care should be similar for all patients independent of the underlying disease. This study compared, using a validated health-related quality of life (HRQoL)-instrument, whether the perceived burden of illness is similar in patients admitted for secondary care treatment into a university hospital because of one of six common conditions.

Methods: HRQoL, assessed by the generic 15D instrument before elective treatment, was compared in six groups: operative treatment of cataract (n=219), operative treatment of cervical or lumbar radicular pain (n=270), hysterectomy due to benign uterine conditions (n=337), hip or knee replacement surgery (n=223), coronary angiography due to suspected coronary artery disease (n=261), and secondary care treatment of depression (n=89).

Very few real-world measurements of road dust suspension have been performed to date. This study compares two different techniques (referred to as Sniffer and Emma) to measure road dust emissions. The main differences between the systems are the construction of the inlet, different instruments for recording particulate matter (PM) levels, and different loads on the wheel axes (the weight of Sniffer was much higher than that of Emma).

A companion paper describes three extensions to a classification system for paediatric speech sound disorders termed the Speech Disorders Classification System (SDCS). The SDCS uses perceptual and acoustic data reduction methods to obtain information on a speaker's speech, prosody, and voice. The present paper provides reliability estimates for the two perceptual methods (narrow phonetic transcription; prosody-voice coding) and the acoustic analysis methods the SDCS uses to describe and classify a speaker's speech competence, precision, and stability.

Antidepressant drug treatment and psychotherapy are both effective in treating major depression, but there are no published studies comparing the effects of these two treatments on the dopaminergic neurotransmitter system in major depression. We conducted a randomized comparative study on the effects of fluoxetine medication and short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy on striatal and thalamic dopamine D(2/3) receptors in patients with major depression. The perfectly matched layer (PML) technique is applied to a reactive scattering problem for accurate domain truncation. A two-dimensional model for dissociative adsorbtion and associative desorption of H(2) from a flat surface is considered, using a finite difference spatial discretization and the Arnoldi method for time-propagation.
