In this study, adequate forms of treatment and choice of medication in the opioid substitution treatment of opioid-dependent prisoners are discussed from a health-economic perspective with a special focus on depot applications.

Studies have shown that substitution therapies are best suited to treat opioid use disorder and reduce the risk of HIV and hepatitis C transmission and overdose.
