Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study from the Australia and New Zealand Congenital Outcomes Registry for Surgery database. All patients younger than 18 years of age (n = 12,290) undergoing pediatric cardiac surgical procedures between January 1, 2013, and December 31, 2021, who required post-cardiotomy extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in the same admission were included.

In this context, the pronounced prevalence of odd-oxidation states in less precious metals bears untapped potential for fundamentally distinct reactivity modes via metalloradical catalysis. Contrary to the well-established reactivity paradigm that organic free radicals, upon addition to a vinylcyclopropane, lead to rapid ring opening under strain release-a transformation that serves widely as a mechanistic probe (radical clock) for the intermediacy of radicals-we herein show that a metal-based radical, that is, a Ni metalloradical, triggers reversible cis/trans isomerization instead of opening.

External cycling regenerating nitrogen oxides (NO ≡ NO + NO) from their oxidative reservoir, NO, is proposed to reshape the temporal-spatial distribution of NO and consequently hydroxyl radical (OH), the most important oxidant in the atmosphere. Here we verify the in situ external cycling of NO in various environments with nitrous acid (HONO) as an intermediate based on synthesized field evidence collected onboard aircraft platform at daytime. External cycling helps to reconcile stubborn underestimation on observed ratios of HONO/NO and NO/NO by current chemical model schemes and rationalize atypical diurnal concentration profiles of HONO and NO lacking noontime valleys specially observed in low-NO atmospheres.

We demonstrate histopathology, neointimal proliferation, and neo-endothelialization in an explanted valved expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) conduit 40 months postimplantation that was void of calcification and inflammation, confirmed by CD-31 positivity on immunohistochemistry. Grossly, there was no distortion with preserved leaflets and lack of calcification. Good biocompatibility, nonreactivity, and low antigenicity, combined with neointimal and endothelial layer generation within the conduit might explain the low infection rates and minimal thrombogenicity.

This study aimed at identifying factors influencing SARS-CoV-2-specific IgG antibody levels after vaccination and/or infection. Between January 2022 and March 2023, 2000 adults (≥18 years, Salzburg, Austria) participated in this population-based seroprevalence study by providing 3 mL of blood to detect SARS-CoV-2-specific IgG antibodies using an anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG quantitative assay and by completing a self-designed questionnaire including anthropometric factors, vaccination information, and medical history. For 77 of the participants, a time-course study up to 24 weeks post vaccination or quarantine end was performed.

An aortopulmonary window (APW) is a communication between the main pulmonary artery (MPA) and the ascending aorta in the presence of two separate semilunar valves. Surgical strategies described for the management of APW include ligation, division and suturing, patch closure of APW (transaortic or transpulmonary or transwindow), and device closure. Ligation of a type-2 APW can result in stenosis or complete closure of the right pulmonary artery (RPA) off the MPA, while leaving the aorta still opening into the RPA.
