Mutation or loss of MerTK as well as deficiency of alphavbeta5-integrins, gives rise to retinal-degeneration due to inefficient phagocytosis of photoreceptor outer-segment fragments by the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). This study shows that Gas6 expressed endogenously by human RPE promotes phagocytosis. The RPE expresses Gas6 more highly in vivo and in serum-reduced conditions in vitro than in high-serum conditions, suggesting a negative-feedback control.

Eyes with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) demonstrate accumulation of specific deposits and extracellular matrix (ECM) molecules under the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Aim: The objective of this comparative study was to validate, through empirical data, the use of interactive, problem-oriented computer-aided-learning (CAL) and computer-aided-testing (CAT) in dental studies by directly comparing these methods with conventional teaching.

Method: A total of 95 students from the third and fourth clinical semesters participated in an interdisciplinary seminar on oral maxillofacial implantology; 47 of these were taught using conventional teaching methods, while the remaining 48 students were taught using mobiTED, a CAL/CAT-based interactive communication system that can be used patient- and problem-oriented. An examination was given at the end of the course to evaluate student learning.

Statement Of Problem: It has been shown that under cyclic loading, more chipping fractures of the veneer ceramic occur on the occlusal surface of screw-retained implant-supported fixed partial dentures (FPDs) with unrestored screw access holes (SAHs) than in cemented restorations. The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) contains melanosomes similar to those found in the skin melanocytes, which undergo dramatic light-dependent movements in fish and amphibians. Female ROP Os/+ mice are partially protected by endogenous estrogens against progressive glomerulosclerosis (GS) during their reproductive period; however, ovariectomy accelerates GS progression. We examined the effects of continuous and intermittent 17beta-estradiol (E(2)) replacement and tamoxifen therapy on the development of GS in ovariectomized (Ovx) ROP Os/+ mice. Continuous E(2) replacement (CE(2)) throughout 9 months prevented microalbuminuria and excess extracellular matrix accumulation in Ovx ROP Os/+, not only compared to placebo-treated Ovx mice but also in comparison to intact female ROP Os/+.
