For the past 50 years, significant progress has been made in understanding Seasonal Hyperacute Panuveitis (SHAPU), a mysterious blinding disease first reported in Nepal in 1975. Predominantly affecting Nepalese children, SHAPU occurs cyclically every odd year from September to December. While initially misclassified as endophthalmitis, SHAPU is set apart by its lack of trauma or surgery, failure to grow organisms in most intraocular fluid cultures, and its hallmark presentation of a "white pupil in red eye" with an association with moth exposure.

Tissue acidification resulting from dysregulated cellular bioenergetics accompanies various inflammatory states. GPR68, along with other members of proton-sensing G protein-coupled receptors, responds to extracellular acidification and has been implicated in chronic inflammation-related diseases such as ischemia, cancer, and colitis. The present study examined the role of extracellular acidification on human pulmonary endothelial cell (EC) permeability and inflammatory status per se and investigated potential synergistic effects of acidosis on endothelial dysfunction caused by bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS, ).

Background And Purpose: In idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) patients, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow is typically evaluated with a cardiac-gated two-dimensional (2D) phase-contrast (PC) MRI through the cerebral aqueduct. This approach is limited by the evaluation of a single location and does not account for respiration effects on flow. In this study, we quantified the cardiac and respiratory contributions to CSF movement at multiple intracranial locations using a real-time 2D PC-MRI and evaluated the diagnostic value of CSF dynamics biomarkers in classifying iNPH patients.

Background And Purpose: Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics disorder as evidenced by the delayed ascent of radiotracers over the cerebral convexity on radionuclide cisternography. However, the exact mechanism causing this disruption remains unclear. Elucidating the pathophysiology of iNPH is crucial, as it is a treatable cause of dementia.

Background: The interactions between bacterial pathogens and host cells are characterized by a multitude of complexities, leading to a wide range of heterogeneous outcomes. Despite extensive research, we still have a limited understanding of how bacterial motility in complex environments impacts their ability to tolerate antibiotics and adhere to mammalian cell surfaces. The challenge lies in unraveling the complexity of these interactions and developing quantitative microscopy approaches to predict the behavior of bacterial populations.

Brownmillerite KBiFeO (KBFO) and KbiFeTiO (KBFTO) ceramics were synthesized using the prereacted nanopowders of KFeO (KFO) and BiFeO (BFO), and KFO and BiFeTiO (BFTO), respectively, via the reactive templated method. The powder X-ray diffraction patterns confirmed the monoclinic phase of the KBFO and KBFTO samples. The incorporation of Ti at Fe site prevented the formation of a secondary phase (BiFeO) in the KBFTO sample.

Article Synopsis
  • Necrotizing pancreatitis is a rare but serious condition that can happen in kids and is hard to diagnose because symptoms can be different.
  • An 8-year-old girl had symptoms like vomiting and stomach pain, and doctors found she had necrotizing pancreatitis, which they treated with fluids and antibiotics.
  • Although it's uncommon, awareness is important because it can affect kids, and doctors now prefer less invasive treatments instead of surgery.

Background: Total body irradiation (TBI) for hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) has certain distinct advantages, such as uniform dose distribution and lack of drug resistance, but it is not widely available in resource-constrained settings. To overcome the limitations of in-house radiotherapy services in hematology centers, we evaluated the feasibility of conducting HSCT programs in coordination with two physically distant centers using a reduced-intensity TBI protocol.

Methods: Thirty-two patients with a median age of 20.

Background And Purpose: Spontaneous intracranial hypotension is a condition resulting from a leak of CSF from the spinal canal arising independent of a medical procedure. Spontaneous intracranial hypotension can present with normal brain MR imaging findings and nonspecific symptoms, leading to the underdiagnosis in some patients and unnecessary invasive myelography in others who are found not to have the condition. Given the likelihood that spontaneous intracranial hypotension alters intracranial biomechanics, the goal of this study was to evaluate MR elastography as a potential noninvasive test to diagnose the condition.

Glycophorin A (GPA), a red blood cell (RBC) surface glycoprotein, can maintain peripheral blood leukocyte quiescence through interaction with a sialic acid-binding Ig-like lectin (Siglec-9). Under inflammatory conditions such as sickle cell disease (SCD), the GPA of RBCs undergo structural changes that affect this interaction. Peripheral blood samples from patients with SCD before and after RBC transfusions were probed for neutrophil and monocyte activation markers and analyzed by fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS).
