Integration of Art Into Radiological Societies & Educational Conferences: Early Experiences of the 2021 ACR Art Task Force.

Interest in incorporating art into radiology has been growing in recent years. Radiological societies have begun to acknowledge the benefits art can bring to our field. Given this growing interest, a task force was created in 2021 to carry out integration of the arts into the annual American College of Radiology (ACR) meeting.

How can Artistic Paintings Broaden Medical Students' Understanding of the Radiology Profession?

Rationale And Objectives: The purpose of this study is to explore how representational paintings of radiology encounters with patients may impact medical students' understanding and impression of both radiologists and the radiology profession.

Methods: Participants included third year medical students at a single institution rotating through a one-week radiology elective. Three works of art were analyzed using the validated Visual Thinking Strategies technique.

Designing a Comprehensive Undergraduate Medical Education Radiology Curriculum Using the 5C's of Radiology Education Framework.

The 5C's of Radiology Education is a tool created from a recent qualitative study designed to explore how radiology exposures impact medical student opinions and perceptions of radiology and radiologists. It outlines the factors that the medical students identified as important for their radiology education. These factors are curriculum, coaching, collaborating, career, and commitment.

Radiology Exposure in the Undergraduate Curriculum: A Medical Student Perspective on Quality and Opportunities for Positive Change.

Purpose: This article is a continuation of a qualitative study designed to explore how radiology exposures can impact medical student opinions and perceptions of radiology and radiologists. We focused on: 1) conducting a radiology exposure inventory from the perspective of the medical student; 2) student evaluation of the quality of the radiology exposures and suggestions for positive change; and 3) development of a framework to address the needs of medical students as it relates to radiology education in the undergraduate medical curriculum.

Methods: Research methodology and design for this qualitative study were described in detail in a previous article by Visscher et al [1].

Women in Radiology: Exploring the Gender Disparity.

Purpose: In 2015, only 1.5% of female Canadian medical students pursued radiology as a specialty, versus 5.6% of men.

Health literacy represents the cognitive and social skills that determine the motivation and ability of individuals to gain access to, understand, and use information in ways that promote and maintain good health.(1) According to the 2003 International Adult Literacy and Life Skills Survey (IALSS), over 12 million (60%) adult Canadians lack the capacity to obtain, understand, and act on health information and services, as well as make appropriate health decisions on their own.(2,3) Of these 12 million Canadians, the elderly are the most health illiterate age group in Canada.

The Exposure Dilemma: Qualitative Study of Medical Student Opinions and Perceptions of Radiology.

Purpose: According to a national survey of over 900 Canadian medical students, the stereotype of an isolated radiologist working in a dark room persists. The purpose of this study is to use qualitative methods to explore the ways exposure to radiology in medical school impacts students' opinions and perceptions of radiology and radiologists.

Methods: After receiving ethics approval, 4 focus groups were conducted, 1 per year of undergraduate medical training at Western University.

Patient-appropriate health literacy educational materials in ophthalmology.

Objective: To evaluate the literacy level of patients with glaucoma in a tertiary care teaching centre compared with a rural community centre and to assess comprehension of and preference for educational material written at different reading levels.

Design: Prospective, randomized, double-blinded study.

Participants: Patients with glaucoma presenting for routine examination or referral at a tertiary care academic centre in southwestern Ontario and a single general ophthalmology clinic located in a moderately sized suburban community in Ontario, Canada, were invited to participate in this study.

Intrahepatic ovulation.

Ectopic ovaries are a rare finding in the literature, with fewer than 50 published cases to date. This phenomenon has been found in the omentum, bladder, mesentery, and uterus; attached to the colon; inside the left labia majora; and in the kidney. Various etiologies have been proposed, including postsurgical or postinflammatory transplantation, malignant origins, and abnormal embryologic development.

Refining perforator selection for DIEP breast reconstruction using transit time flow volume measurements.

Transit time flow volume has been used in cardiac surgery to assess small vessel flow characteristics. This study examines the usefulness of transit time flow volume (TTFV) in assessing perforator vessels in deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEP) flap harvesting. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation among computed tomographic angiography (CTA), intraoperative TTFV measurements, and hand-held Doppler signals in identifying perforators.

Evidence-based treatment of acute infective conjunctivitis: Breaking the cycle of antibiotic prescribing.

Objective: To discover the best treatments for acute infective conjunctivitis and to discern whether antibiotics are necessary for the resolution of bacterial conjunctivitis in particular.

Quality Of Evidence: MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic reviews were searched. Findings were limited to full-text articles from core clinical journals in the English language, and are based on level I or level II evidence.
