Diabetes mellitus (DM) is characterized by hyperglycemia and alterations in the metabolism of lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins. Due to its hypoglycemic effect Vochysia rufa is frequently used in Uberlandia, Brazil, to treat DM. Despite its popularity, there is little information about its effect on hepatic tissue.

The gastroprotective effects of Eugenia dysenterica (Myrtaceae) leaf extract: the possible role of condensed tannins.

We applied a taxonomic approach to select the Eugenia dysenterica (Myrtaceae) leaf extract, known in Brazil as "cagaita," and evaluated its gastroprotective effect. The ability of the extract or carbenoxolone to protect the gastric mucosa from ethanol/HCl-induced lesions was evaluated in mice. The contributions of nitric oxide (NO), endogenous sulfhydryl (SH) groups and alterations in HCl production to the extract's gastroprotective effect were investigated.

Heterotopic gastrointestinal mucosa in the oral cavity of adults.

Heterotopic gastrointestinal mucosa (HGM) is a rare entity observed in the head and neck region and occurs more frequently in male infants and children. The floor of the mouth and anterior aspects of the tongue are the most commonly affected sites. Histologically, HGM resembles gastric, intestinal or colonic mucosa with areas of squamous epithelium, which can be cystic or solid.

Odontogenic glandular cyst: a case report.

Glandular Odontogenic Cyst (GOC) is a rare developmental cyst of the jaws. The histological features of GOC strongly suggest an origin from the remains of dental lamina. Radiographically, GOC presents as well-defined radiolucencies with uni- or multilocular appearance.

Chondrosarcoma of the mandible: case report and literature review.

Chondrosarcoma is a malignant cartilaginous tumor that rarely occurs in the maxillofacial bones. A 44-year-old woman complained about swelling and mild pain during mastication in the right parasymphysis region. Clinical and radiographic examinations revealed characteristics of osteosarcoma.

Expression of matrix metalloproteinases 2 and 9 in odontogenic myxoma in vivo and in vitro.

Odontogenic myxoma is a benign neoplasm, which presents local invasiveness and tendency for recurrence. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) 2 and 9 are involved in tumor invasion. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze the expression and activity of these MMPs in odontogenic myxoma in vivo and in vitro.

Epithelioid osteosarcoma of the mandible: a rare case with unusual immunoprofile.

A 42-year-old woman presented a large, nontender, quickly progressive mass in the left mandible. Radiograph showed extensive destruction of the angle, posterior body, and ramus of the left side of the mandible. The patient was surgically treated by hemimandibulectomy.

Irradiation at 780 nm increases proliferation rate of osteoblasts independently of dexamethasone presence.

Background And Objectives: We have previously shown that phototherapy increases cell growth and impairs protein secretion of fibroblasts. Our objective was to study the effect of phototherapy on osteoblast-like cells in culture treated with dexamethasone.

Study Design/materials And Methods: Rat calvaria osteoblast-like cells were previously treated or not with dexamethasone and then, they were irradiated or not with a GaAlAs diode laser (wavelength of 780 nm, 10 mW, 3 J/cm2).

Effect of the chemical composition of Ricinus communis polyurethane on rat bone marrow cell attachment, proliferation, and differentiation.

Alterations in the chemical composition of a polymer may be undertaken to improve its biological properties. The aim of this study was to investigate the in vitro biocompatibility of Ricinus communis polyurethane (RCP) with three different chemical compositions: RCPp (pure RCP), RCP+CaCO(3), and RCP+Ca(3)(PO(4))(2). Rat bone marrow cells were cultivated under conditions that allowed osteoblastic differentiation and were evaluated for cell attachment, cell proliferation, cell morphology, total protein content, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, and bonelike nodule formation.
