Background: The incidence of community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) is traditionally high in remote areas of Canada with large Aboriginal populations. Northwestern Ontario is home to 28,000 First Nations people in more than 30 remote communities; rates of CA-MRSA are unknown.
Objective: To determine the CA-MRSA rates and antibiotic susceptibilities in this region.
Phase 1 of this initiative was designed to examine the current state of practice in acute care and to provide administrators with research evidence for identifying areas for improvement. Data were collected through observational research using function analysis augmented by a staff survey and interviews. Data were collected from 17 acute care sites across Vancouver Island and the Mainland of British Columbia involving four health authorities.

Andersen and Newman's Behavioural Model of Health Services Use guided the selection of variables, analyses, and interpretation of the findings. Descriptive, correlation, and multiple logistic regression analyses were completed in each of the first 3 cross-sectional cycles of Statistics Canada's National Population Health Surveys.
