Evidence Synthesis: A total of 16 studies were identified, involving 16 patients with a Male-Female Ratio of 3:1 and mean age of 50.

Purpose: To retrospectively evaluate the short-term and the long-term oncological outcome between two groups of patients who had undergone either high or low ligation of inferior mesenteric vessels (IMV) in rectal cancer surgery.
Methods: Between January 2009 and December 2014, 120 patients with rectosigmoid and rectal adenocarcinoma were operated with curative intent as first therapeutic option. Patients were divided in two groups depending on the level of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) ligation.
