Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated the link between neighborhood opioid prescription rates and opioid-related deaths among individuals who did not have an opioid prescription.
  • Using data from Ontario between 2013 and 2019, the researchers found no significant relationship between the volume of prescribed opioids and overall opioid mortality, though there was a positive association with prescription-related deaths and an inverse association with nonprescription-related deaths.
  • The findings suggest that while prescribed opioids may help some patients, they may also pose risks; thus, addressing the opioid epidemic requires a balanced approach that supports effective pain management and enhances safety through harm-reduction strategies.
