Osteopenia in children and adolescents with hyperprolactinemia.

Three patients with hyperprolactinemia due to pituitary adenomas (two patients) or empty sella (one patient) and osteopenia are described. Their ages at presentation ranged from 8 to 17 years. Each patient was treated with cabergoline.

Autoantibodies predicting diabetes mellitus type I in celiac disease.

Unlabelled: Celiac disease (CD) and diabetes mellitus type I (DM-I) are both autoimmune diseases. Abnormal first-phase insulin response (FPIR) is associated with the prediabetic phase. Glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) and islet cell antibodies (ICAs) - especially the tyrosine phosphatase-like protein IA-2 antibodies - are considered to be serological markers of DM-I future development.

Islet autoantibodies and insulin dependent diabetes mellitus in cystic fibrosis.

Cystic fibrosis-related diabetes mellitus (CF-DM) is thought to be secondary to beta-cell destruction by fibrous tissue replacing the exocrine pancreas. The aim of this study was to investigate the hypothesis that other factors may also be responsible. Glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) and islet cell (IA-2) antibodies were measured by quantitative ELISA in a group of patients with CF (n=30) in comparison to a group of newly diagnosed DM type 1 (IDDM) patients (n=30) and normal subjects (n=30).

Metabolism and inflammatory mediators in the peritendinous space measured by microdialysis during intermittent isometric exercise in humans.

Effect of the beta 1-blocker/beta 2-agonist celiprolol on atrial natriuretic peptide plasma levels in hypertensive patients.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term effects of the selective beta 1-blocker/beta 2-agonist celiprolol on atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) levels in patients with moderate essential hypertension. The drug was given orally in a daily dose of 200 mg for 30 days. Plasma ANP levels increased by 187% despite the drop in blood pressure, while left atrial and ventricular diameters remained unchanged.

Histamine and serotonin in uremic pruritus: effect of ondansetron in CAPD-pruritic patients.

Pruritus is a common, unpleasant symptom of uremic patients. Serotonin and histamine have been reported as possible mediators ofuremic pruritus, and ondansetron is a potent and selective inhibitor of 5-HT3 receptors. The aims of our study were (1) to evaluate the effect of ondansetron on uremic pruritus in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients and its safety and (2) to investigate the role of histamine and serotonin in uremic pruritus.

ANP concentrations during interchanging DDD-VVI pacing modes in patients with retrograde ventriculoatrial conduction.

The main reason for the pacemaker syndrome during VVI pacing is the existence of ventriculoatrial conduction (V-AC). Twenty-five patients with a permanent DDD pacemaker and ventriculoatrial conduction were included in the study. IN those patients the hemodynamic changes were evaluated in relation to ANP plasma concentration changes during different modes of pacing.

Atrial natriuretic factor responses to submaximal and maximal exercise.

The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the plasma concentration of atrial natriuretic factor (ANF), K+, Na+, blood lactate, heart rate, and blood pressure in moderately trained women. Ten healthy women were studied on a cycle ergometer during 20 min of constant submaximal and maximal exercise, as well as during recovery. The ANF concentration was determined by radioimmunoassay.

Alterations in Thyroid Hormones and Thyrotropin (TSH) in Morbidly Obese Patients before and after Vertical Gastroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Published results of studies of thyroid function in obesity and after weight loss have differed. METHODS: The circulating concentrations of thyroid hormones and TSH were studied in 30 consecutive, euthyroid morbidly obese patients before and after weight loss from vertical gastroplasty, with the aim to determine the relation between body weight loss and pituitary-thyroid axis function. Serum TSH, free T3 (FT3) and free T4 (FT4) were measured before operation and repeated 6 and 18 months postoperatively.

Plasma TSH, T3, T4 and cortisol responses to swimming at varying water temperatures.

The acute effect of 30-min swimming at a moderate speed, at three water temperatures (20, 26 and 32 degrees C) on plasma thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (F.T4), triiodothyronine (T3) and cortisol concentrations was studied in 15 élite male swimmers. Blood was sampled before and immediately after the events.

Acute cyclosporin A renal dysfunction in dogs reversed by calcium antagonists and antiplatelet agents.

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of nifedipine and piracetam alone or in combination in the protection of renal function and morphology after cyclosporin A (CyA) administration. Thirty healthy mongrel dogs with a mean body weight of 15 kg were sacrificed. Six animals (group C) were given CyA 20 mg/kg body weight per os, while the remaining groups (8 animals each) were given concomitantly 20 mg nifedipine (group CN) or 4 g of piracetam (group CP), or both drugs in combination (group CNP).

Effects of famotidine on gastric mucus of the rat.

The influence of famotidine on the production of gastric mucus was studied at experimental level. We measured the quantity of the intracellular mucus, the surface adherent mucus gel thickness, and the biosynthesis of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) by the rat gastric mucosa, in pretreated animals. A pilot study of piracetam in cuprophan hemodialysis.

Twelve patients, 8 male and 4 female, aged from 26 to 70 years were studied. They were on hemodialysis (HD) 4 h three times weekly with cuprophan hollow fiber dialyzers (Gambro 120M) and dialysate containing 35 mEq/L of acetate. The study compares two random HD sessions on each patient.
