Background/aims: The aim of this study is to present the advantages of LAGB (Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding), its effects on weight loss and influence on comorbidities such as diabetes and hypertension.
Methodology: 90 middle-aged obese patients with body mass index [BMI] of 35-50 kg/m2 underwent LAGB between October 2007 and April 2010.
Results: There were 33 men and 57 women underwent LAGB.

Background: Minimally invasive esophagectomy for esophageal cancer include thoracoscopic and laparoscopic esophagectomy with a cervical single-port assist, which is inadequate for both techniques. This is the first reported series applying this technique to treat esophageal cancer patients in literature.
Materials And Methods: From March 2007 to April 2011, 12 cases of laparoscopic and thoracoscopic total esophagectomy with a cervical single-port assist were performed.
Purpose: This study's purpose was to assess characteristics of pediatric patients with odontogenic-based facial cellulitis, treatment strategies, and their relationship to length of stay (LOS).
Methods: This retrospective study was performed on individuals younger than 18 years old who were hospitalized for facial cellulitis of odontogenic origin (FCOO). Medical records were reviewed for all patients with a discharge diagnosis of FCOO or buccal cellulitis.
Background: We aim to evaluate the metabolic and inflammatory responses after ERCP procedure in patients who have common bile duct stones.
Methods: Between September 2009 and October 2010, we studied prospectively 50 patients who diagnosed with common bile duct stones. Our study was included patients who had previously been suspected with common biliary duct stone via radiological and biochemical examinations.
Purpose: To compare the effects of different anesthesia techniques on tourniquet-related ischemia-reperfusion by measuring the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) and neuromuscular side effects.
Methods: Sixty ASAI-II patients undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery were randomised to three groups. In Group S, intrathecal anesthesia was administered using levobupivacaine.

Background: Hepatitis B and C are the leading causes of liver diseases worldwide. For hematological and solid malignancy patients undergoing chemotherapy, increases in HBV DNA and HCV RNA levels can be detected which may result in reactivation and hepatitis-related morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of Hbs ag and Anti HCV positivity in patients with solid malignancies undergoing chemotherapy and consequences during follow-up.

Purpose: This study was intended to investigate the effect of dexmedetomidine on oxidative stress response in pneumoperitoneum established in rats.
Methods: Animals were randomized into three groups, group S: with no pneumoperitoneum, group P: with pneumoperitoneum established, and group D: given 100 mcg intraperitoneal dexmedetomidine 30 min before establishment of pneumoperitoneum. Plasma total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), and oxidative stress index (OSI) activity were measured 30 min after conclusion of pneumoperitoneum.
Objective. To investigate serum levels of free β-HCG, progesterone, and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) and their combined use in the prediction of first trimester abortions. Methods.

In more than 95% of mushroom toxicity cases, poisoning occurs as a result of misidentification of the mushroom by an amateur mushroom hunter.

Materials And Methods: A total of 52 obese surgical menopausal women with a body mass index (BMI) > 30 kg/m2 were admitted to the study. Twenty-seven women received estradiol hemihydrate two mg and 25 did not receive any menopausal therapy.

Bismuth is a chemical element symbolized as Bi and is a trivalent poor metal, which chemically resembles arsenic and antimony. Colloidal bismuth subcitrate (CBS) and bismuth subsalicylate are the bismuth salts widely used in the treatment of peptic ulcers, functional dyspepsia, and chronic gastritis. Intoxications with CBS are rare.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to define whether there was folate deficiency in hospitalized preterm infants, and, second, to define the effect of feeding modalities on serum folate levels.
Methods: Infants born ≤ 32 weeks of gestation were included in the study. Blood samples for the determination of serum folate levels were obtained on days 14 and 28 postnatally, as well as 36 weeks postconceptionally (or just before discharge if patients are discharged <36 weeks)--samples A, B, and C, respectively.
This study was conducted to investigate the hormonal and histological changes in the ovaries with high doses of methylprednisolone administration for acute spinal cord injury (SCI). Group I (trauma group, eight rats) were subjected to laminectomy and SCI but received no treatment. Group II (steroid group, eight rats) were subjected to SCI and received methylprednisolone (30 mg/kg, intraperitoneally).

Early predictors of severity of disease have yet to be identified. TNF-alpha and IL-6 stimulate virus-specific immunoglobulin production and it has been postulated that determination of levels of these cytokines may be useful as a prognostic factor.

The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy, safety, and surgical outcomes of the laparoscopic common bile duct exploration plus laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LCBDE+LC) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography plus laparoscopic cholecystectomy (ERCP+LC).
Methods: One hundred twenty patients were prospectively randomized into 2 groups: LCBDE with LC in a single intervention and LC after ERCP.
Lithium is one of the drugs used widely in the treatment of mood disorders. However, it has a very narrow therapeutic index and side effects can be seen in many organ systems, one of which affects the kidneys. We can see varying degrees of renal damage associated with acute or chronic lithium use.

The amanitins group effectively blocks the RNA polymerase II enzyme found in eukaryotic cells. As alpha amanitin has a lethal effect on the majority of eukaryotic cells, it can be valuable as an antiparasitic or antifungal drug.
