The civil employment experiences of amputee veterans: The case of Turkey.

Military veterans who became disabled due to conflict-related trauma face various challenges in finding and maintaining employment in civilian life. This study aims to understand the transition processes of disabled veterans in Turkey into civilian employment, as well as their experiences in maintaining and sustaining employment during this process. A qualitative research design was used in the study.

Does immunohistochemical staining predict mobilization success in multiple myeloma patients?

Background: So many risk factors for mobilization failure have been described so far. We aimed to identify the risk factors and search the possible effects of bone marrow fibrosis (BMF), CD56, c-myc, and cyclinD1 expression on mobilization.

Methods: We evaluated 189 patients with MM who were admitted for stem cell mobilization before autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) between 2015 and June 2021.

A new scoring system to predict survival in elderly advanced stage Hodgkin lymphoma patients.

Predictive prognostic scoring (PS) systems are not primarily applicable to elderly patients with classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL). The objective of this study was to develop a PS system for these patients. The derivation cohort (DC) was utilized for model development, consisting of 97 variables.

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Diabetic Foot Patients: A Shift in the Infectious Agent Profile Toward Nonfermentative Gram-Negative Bacilli.

Background: Diabetes foot infection is a very important public health problem that causes serious health problems, mortality, and high health expenditures, and is one of the most important complications of diabetes mellitus. There are concerns that approaches such as limited personal visits to doctors, avoidance of hospitals, and restrictions on nonemergency surgical procedures during the coronavirus disease of 2019 pandemic pose a threat to those with diabetic foot problems, including diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs), ischemia, and infection, resulting in increased limb loss and mortality.

Methods: This multicenter, retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted in 14 tertiary care hospitals from various regions of Turkey.

A case of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever complicated with portal vein thrombosis and hemophagocytosis.

Objectives: Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a zoonotic viral infection which is an important public health problem in Turkey. CCHF causes fever and bleeding and can lead to severe health outcomes. The study aims to report a case of a male patient with severe CCHF, hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) treated with steroids and portal vein thrombosis.

Long-Term Results of Immunogenicity of Booster Vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 (Hybrid COV-RAPEL TR Study) in Turkiye: A Double-Blind, Randomized, Controlled, Multicenter Phase 2 Clinical Study.

The immunogenicity of vaccines decreases over time, causing a need for booster doses. This study aimed to present the long-term (Day 84) immunogenicity results of the double-blind, randomized, controlled, phase II Hybrid COV-RAPEL TR Study (NCT04979949), in which the TURKOVAC or CoronaVac vaccines were used as a booster after the second dose of primary vaccination with CoronaVac. A total of 190 participants from the Hybrid COV-RAPEL TR Study, who had both Day 28 and Day 84 immunogenicity results, were included.

Evaluation of treatment efficacy after switching to dolutegravir-lamivudine dual therapy in people living with HIV.

Background: People living with HIV need to use antiretroviral therapy throughout their lives.

Objectives: Studies on the efficacy and safety of dual therapy are limited in Turkey. We sought to evaluate the treatment efficacy and side effects among patients who were given a combination of dolutegravir (DTG) and lamivudine (3TC) as a maintenance therapy.

The Relationship between COVID-19 Protection Behaviors and Pandemic-Related Knowledge, Perceptions, Worry Content, and Public Trust in a Turkish Sample.

Background: This study aimed to explore the effect of knowledge, COVID-19-related perceptions, and public trust on protective behaviors in Turkish people. Methods: Data were collected from an online survey (Turkish COVID-19 Snapshot Monitoring) conducted between July 2020 and January 2021. The recommended protective behaviors (hand cleaning, wearing a face mask, and physical distancing) to prevent COVID-19 were examined.

Results of multicenter registry for patients with inherited factor VII deficiency in Turkey.

Introduction: Inherited factor VII (FVII) deficiency (FVIID) is the most common of inherited rare bleeding disorders. Other determinants of clinical severity apart from FVII level (FVIIL) include genetic and environmental factors. We aimed to identify the cut-off FVIILs for general and severe bleedings in patients with FVIID by using an online national registry system including clinical, laboratory, and demographic characteristics of patients.

Outcomes of Cessation of Antiviral Therapy in Chronic Hepatitis B: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Objective: Data on the efficacy and duration of nucleos(t)ide analogue (NUC) therapies to prevent the development of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients are scarce and heterogeneous. This study aimed to summarize the clinical and laboratory results of the patients with CHB infection who discontinued oral antiviral therapy.

Methods: A single-centered cohort study was conducted with CHB infection.

Early Clostridioides difficile infection characterizations, risks, and outcomes in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell and solid organ transplant recipients.

Background: Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) frequently complicates allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell (allo-HCT) and solid organ transplantation (SOT).

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed risk factors and outcomes of CDI occurring within 30 days of transplant.

Results: Between March 2010 and June 2015, 466 allo-HCT and 1454 SOT were performed.

An examination of the characteristics of mothers neglecting their children.

Background: This study is aimed to recognize families who have neglected their children in the early period, to raise awareness among experts especially pediatricians-working in this field about the reasons contributing to the neglect.

Methods: For this purpose, data were collected by quantitative and qualitative methods. The mothers of 32 neglected children and 30 children who were not neglected were included in to the study.

In Vitro Closure Times (PFA-100) Are Different Between Peritoneal Dialysis and Hemodialysis.

Introduction:  Platelet dysfunction is not uncommon in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Type of renal replacement therapy may have an effect on platelet functions, which has not been well investigated. We evaluated in vitro closure time (CT) differences between peritoneal dialysis (PD) and hemodialysis (HD) patients using platelet function analyzer (PFA-100)and observed a significant difference between these renal replacement therapies.

Tissue mast cell counts may be associated with decreased severity of gastrointestinal acute GVHD and nonrelapse mortality.

The functions of mast cells in human graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) are unknown. We studied 56 patients who had an allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (alloHCT) with a biopsy for diagnosis of gastrointestinal tract (GIT) GVHD before any treatment (including steroids): 35 with GIT GVHD, 21 HCT recipients whose biopsies did not confirm GVHD, and 9 with a new diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) as a comparison. The median number of mast cells (mean of CD117+ cells, counted in 3 selected spots under 40× magnification) was similar between patients with GVHD (59 cells) and those without GVHD (60 cells).

Standard chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) targets proliferative cells and efficiently induces complete remission; however, many patients relapse and die of their disease. Relapse is caused by leukemia stem cells (LSC), the cells with self-renewal capacity. Self-renewal and proliferation are separate functions in normal hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) in steady-state conditions.

The Levels of Serum Biomarkers in Stable Asthma Patients with Comorbidities.

The effects of comorbidities on systemic inflammation markers in stable asthmatics and the consequences of such effects have not been well evaluated. We aimed to evaluate the effect of comorbidities on clinical manifestations and systemic inflammation in asthmatic patients under control. The study group consisted of asthmatic patients who applied to our pulmonology outpatient clinic and volunteered to participate.

Metacognitive Beliefs and Their Relation with Symptoms in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Introduction: Metacognitive constructs have shown promise in explaining the symptoms of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Few studies have examined the role of metacognitions in symptom dimensions of OCD, despite mounting clinical, neuropsychological and imaging evidence for the distinctiveness of these dimensions.

Methods: Metacognitions were assessed using the Metacognitions Questionnaire (MCQ-30) in 51 participants with DSM IV OCD and 46 healthy controls.

Left ventricular dysfunction in relation with systemic inflammation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients.

Background/aims: Most important cause of mortality in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients is known to be cardiovascular disease (CVD). The objective of the present study was to evaluate the echocardiographic parameters in COPD patients with or without pre-diagnosed CVD and to investigate the relationship between echocardiographic parameters and systemic inflammation markers.

Methods: A total of 60 stable COPD patients (23 patients with CVD, group 1; 37 patients without CVD, group 2) and 21 healthy controls (group 3) were included in the study.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a ubiquitous latent human virus that often causes complications in renal transplantation recipients. AT-rich interactive domain-containing protein 1A (ARID1A), a SWI/SNF (switch/sucrose nonfermentable) chromatin remodeling gene has context-dependent tumor-suppressive and oncogenic roles in cancer.
