Aims: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with heart failure (HF). However, it is unclear if postoperative AF (POAF) following non-cardiac surgery differs from non-surgical AF in terms of the risk of HF. We compared the long-term rate of incident HF in patients developing new-onset POAF following non-cardiac surgery with patients who did not develop POAF following non-cardiac surgery and patients with non-surgical non-valvular AF (NVAF).

Cardiomyopathy, which is shortly defined as a disease of the myocardium, has a broad definition that includes many different diagnoses. Recent advances in cardiac imaging techniques, including basic and advanced echocardiography, computed tomography, nuclear medicine, and cardiac magnetic resonance, allow for a more accurate evaluation of volumes and thickness of cardiac chambers, systolic and diastolic function of the ventricules, and tissue structure. Multimodality imaging often provides the first clinical suspicion for specific etiologies, especially when the medical and family history is unclear, by identification of red flags of underlying systemic diseases.

Article Synopsis
  • Behçet's disease (BD) is a systemic condition that can affect children and may lead to serious cardiovascular issues, like early atherosclerosis, due to ongoing inflammation.
  • This study compared 30 children with juvenile BD to 20 healthy controls, measuring their epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), finding that EAT was significantly thicker in BD patients, while CIMT did not show notable differences.
  • The findings suggest that increased EAT thickness could indicate a risk for early atherosclerosis in children with BD, highlighting the need for further research to explore screening for these risks in larger groups.

Article Synopsis
  • Current guidelines recommend implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy for patients with heart failure and left ventricular ejection fraction ≤35%, but the benefits of ICDs in patients with NYHA class III remain uncertain.
  • The DANISH trial studied 1116 patients and found that those in NYHA class III/IV had higher long-term all-cause and cardiovascular mortality rates compared to those in NYHA class II.
  • Despite these findings, ICD implantation did not significantly reduce all-cause or cardiovascular mortality rates in either NYHA class, indicating a limited benefit of ICD therapy for this patient population.

Objectives: Objectively validated pediatric sleep questionnaires covering a broader age range and different sleep disturbances are lacking, therefore we developed the Sleep Screening Questionnaire Children and Adolescents (SSQ-CA) and compared it with objective sleep parameters.

Methods: This child-reported questionnaire was developed by a multidisciplinary panel and face validated. In a cross-sectional prospective design, participants aged 6-17, answered the questionnaire twice with 21-28 days in between, wore actigraphy (AG) and kept a sleep diary for seven nights and home-polysomnography (PSG) for one of these nights.

Modern agricultural cultivation relies heavily on genetically modified plants that survive after exposure to herbicides that kill weeds. Despite this biotechnology, there is a growing need for new sustainable, environmentally friendly, and biodegradable herbicides. We developed a novel [CuL]Br complex (L = bis{4H-1,3,5-triazino[2,1-b]benzothiazole-2-amine,4-(2-imidazole) that is active on PSII by inhibiting photosynthetic oxygen evolution on the micromolar level.

The effects of the novel [CuL]Br complex (L = bis{4H-1,3,5-triazino [2,1-b]benzothiazole-2-amine,4-(2-imidazole)}copper(II) bromide complex) on the photosystem II (PSII) activity of PSII membranes isolated from spinach were studied. The absence of photosynthetic oxygen evolution by PSII membranes without artificial electron acceptors, but in the presence of [CuL]Br, has shown that it is not able to act as a PSII electron acceptor. In the presence of artificial electron acceptors, [CuL]Br inhibits photosynthetic oxygen evolution.

Factor VII Activating protease (FSAP) has a protective effect in diverse disease conditions as inferred from studies in FSAP mice and humans deficient in FSAP activity due to single-nucleotide polymorphism. The zymogen form of FSAP in plasma is activated by extracellular histones that are released during tissue injury or inflammation or by positively charged surfaces. However, it is not clear whether this activation mechanism is specific and amenable to manipulation.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate electrocardiographic and echocardiographic findings, Holter recordings of the multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, and to identify prognostic factors for cardiac involvement.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed demographic characteristics, medical data, laboratory findings, electrocardiogram and echocardiographic findings, 24-hour Holter recordings, need for an ICU, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children. Acute left ventricular systolic dysfunction was defined as left ventricular ejection fraction (EF) ≤%55 on echocardiography.

Introduction: Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is of great importance as it is the most common cause of sudden cardiac death in childhood. The diagnosis is made by the prolongation of the QTc interval on the electrocardiography. However, clinical heterogeneity and nondiagnostic QTc intervals may cause a delay in the diagnosis.

The respiratory tract is a major entry site for microbial pathogens. To combat bacterial infections, the immune system has various defense mechanisms at its disposal, including antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). To search for novel AMPs from the respiratory tract, a peptide library from human broncho-alveolar-lavage (BAL) fluid was screened for antimicrobial activity by radial diffusion assays allowing the efficient detection of antibacterial activity within a small sample size.

Objective: A 12-lead electrocardiography is a critical component for the screening of long QT syndrome; however, besides, an electrocardiograph, trained personnel are also necessary which limits the screening capability of conventional electrocardiographs. The development of smartphone electrocardiography technologies provides a potential alternative platform for electrocardiography screening for selective purposes such as arrhythmias and QT interval abnormalities. The aim of this pilot study was to assess the reliability of a smartphone-based electrocardiography device in the measurement of QT and corrected QT intervals in children.
