Objective: Group A beta-haemolytic streptococci (GAS), which are responsible for most cases of acute bacterial tonsillopharyngitis, are transmitted from person to person and may rarely cause foodborne outbreaks. This study aims to report the epidemic caused by GAS in our hospital and to draw attention to the explosive outbreaks of the bacteria.

Methods: Acute tonsillopharyngitis was seen in 201 of 450 hospital employees who ate in the hospital cafeteria on 4-5 June 2015.

Autosomal recessive IRF7 deficiency was previously reported in three patients with single critical influenza or COVID-19 pneumonia episodes. The patients' fibroblasts and plasmacytoid dendritic cells produced no detectable type I and III IFNs, except IFN-β. Having discovered four new patients, we describe the genetic, immunological, and clinical features of seven IRF7-deficient patients from six families and five ancestries.

Introduction: The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has had a profound global impact economically, socially, and in many other areas. As vaccines are developed and introduced, their effect on the disease on both, the global and individual scale is a subject of intense curiosity. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between risk factors for hospitalization, disease severity, and vaccination status in COVID-19 inpatients in a pandemic hospital.

Background: The main purpose in this study carried out from the perspective of infodemic was to investigate the relationships between individuals' perceived causes of COVID-19, their attitudes towards vaccine and their levels of trust in information sources in terms of various descriptive characteristics.

Methods: In this cross-sectional and correlational study conducted with 1216 individuals from different provinces of Turkey, the Perception of Causes of COVID-19 (PCa-COVID-19) Scale was used. In addition, a questionnaire including the participants' descriptive characteristics, their attitudes towards vaccine and their level of trust in information sources about Covid-19 was used.

Background: Adiponectin, vaspin and leptin are only a few of these numerous adipocytokines. Little is known about the behavior of adipocytokines and how adipose tissue metabolism is affected in this Type 1 DM model. In this study we investigated the serum levels of adiponectin, leptin, vaspin in streptozotocin(STZ) induced diabetic rats.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the varying outcomes of COVID-19 infection, from asymptomatic cases to severe pneumonia.
  • Researchers identified rare loss-of-function variants at 13 specific human loci related to immune response that are more prevalent in patients with severe illness.
  • Experimental tests revealed that these genetic variants can make human cells more susceptible to SARS-CoV-2, indicating that certain immune deficiencies may contribute to severe COVID-19 cases.

Background: Fever is one of the critical symptoms of collagen vascular diseases, malignancies, and infectious diseases. Patients with a fever of unknown origin (FUO) were evaluated to determine the etiology.

Methods: In this study, 110 cases with FUO who were admitted to two hospitals with a total of 800 beds, in which 5000 daily outpatient patients were admitted between 2006 and 2016 have been evaluated retrospectively.

Setting: Data on the relationship between pleural tuberculosis (TB) and anti-tuberculosis drug resistance are scarce.

Objective: To determine the patterns of drug resistance among pleural Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates in Greece and the incidence of tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE) among patients with multidrug-resistant (MDR) or extensively drug-resistant (XDR) pulmonary TB.

Design: Drug susceptibility testing (DST) results recorded in the database of the National Reference Centre for Tuberculosis in Athens, Greece, over a 9-year period (2003-2011) were reviewed.

Background: CD4+ cells expressing Interferon-γ (IFN-γ), following stimulation with specific mycobacterial antigens, identified with flow cytometry (FCM-CD4+IFN-γ+), is a new method for the diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection. The aim of this study is to investigate the performance of FCM-CD4+IFN-γ+ in comparison with tuberculin skin test (TST) and Quantiferon TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-G-IT) in the diagnosis of latent MTB infection (LTBI), in close contacts and in patients with rheumatic diseases under treatment with anti-TNFa and other biologic agents.

Methods: TST, QFT-G-IT, and FCM-CD4+IFN-γ+ were performed in 56 immunocompetent close contacts and in 65 medically immunosuppressed patients under biologic treatment.

Background: Early secreted antigenic target 6 (ESAT-6) is a virulent factor of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB). The identification of intracellular (i/c) ESAT-6 in host cells would be a direct marker of MTB infection. We developed a method to detect i/cESAT-6 by flow cytometry.
