Article Synopsis
- Major risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) include hypertension, obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome, which are linked to inflammatory conditions that disproportionately affect women, starting from adolescence.
- Hormonal changes during events like menarche, pregnancy, and menopause may lead to a pro-inflammatory state in women, increasing their risk of complications like myocardial infarction and stroke, especially after menopause when the protective effects of estrogen decline.
- There has been historically low representation of women in clinical studies, making it difficult to understand female-specific CVD risks, but new efforts are being made to include women in research to improve knowledge and treatment options targeted at them.
