Barocaloric (BC) materials offer the potential for highly energy-efficient refrigeration by generating heat absorption through the effect of pressure on a solid-solid phase transition. However, very few of the known materials have the required phase transition in the temperature regions necessary for domestic refrigeration or air conditioning. We introduce organic ionic plastic crystals (OIPCs) as a new family of BC materials.

  • Recent vaccination and natural infections have led to a significant drop in severe cases, hospitalizations, and deaths from SARS-CoV-2, despite the emergence of new variants that can evade some immune defenses.
  • Research involving mice showed that they remained protected against a closely related ancestral virus, even with low neutralizing antibodies after exposure to newer variants, suggesting a strong immune response lasting from prior infections.
  • The study highlighted the importance of T cells in providing this protection, as previous infection resulted in higher levels of tissue-resident memory T cells in the nasal area, though less prominent in the lungs.

Waning immunity and the emergence of immune evasive SARS-CoV-2 variants jeopardize vaccine efficacy leading to breakthrough infections. We have previously shown that innate immune cells play a critical role in controlling SARS-CoV-2. To investigate the innate immune response during breakthrough infections, we modeled breakthrough infections by challenging low-dose vaccinated mice with a vaccine-mismatched SARS-CoV-2 Beta variant.

SARS-CoV-2 infection induces the generation of virus-specific CD4 and CD8 effector and memory T cells. However, the contribution of T cells in controlling SARS-CoV-2 during infection is not well understood. Following infection of C57BL/6 mice, SARS-CoV-2-specific CD4 and CD8 T cells are recruited to the respiratory tract, and a vast proportion secrete the cytotoxic molecule granzyme B.

Rechargeable zinc batteries (RZBs) are highly attractive as energy storage solutions due to their low cost and sustainability. Nevertheless, the use of fluorine-free zinc electrolyte systems to create affordable, ecofriendly, and safe RZBs has been largely overlooked in the battery community. Previously, we showcased the utilization of a fluorine-free, nonaqueous electrolyte comprising zinc dicyanamide (Zn(dca)) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) to enable the electrochemical cycling of zinc.

Article Synopsis
  • Burkholderia spp., which are opportunistic pathogens, primarily infect individuals with compromised immune systems; this study examined how these bacteria cause blood infections (bacteremia) in patients from a northern Indian university hospital over one year.
  • Among 300 patients, the average age was about 34 years, with a majority being male; underlying malignancies were the most common diagnosis, and all patients had catheters, with Burkholderia cenocepacia being the most frequently isolated type.
  • Factors such as kidney disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and respiratory disease increased the risk of death from these infections, while patients with malignancies often had better outcomes if the bacteria were treatable with antibiotics.

In recent years, the registrations for a number of commercial insecticides utilized for piercing/sucking insects have been cancelled or restricted. To meet this growing need for new hemipteran controlling agrochemicals, we discovered a 2-(pyridin-3-yl)-thiazole compound, with limited insecticidal activity against cotton/melon aphid (Aphis gossypii). The 2-(pyridin-3-yl)-thiazole moiety offered us a basis to pursue the bicyclic 2-(pyridin-3-yl)-2H-indazole carboxamides.

This study demonstrates the enhanced performance in high-voltage sodium full cells using a novel electrolyte composition featuring a highly fluorinated borate ester anion (1 M Na[B(hfip)].3DME) in a binary carbonate mixture (EC:EMC), compared to a conventional electrolyte (1 M Na[PF] EC:EMC). The prolonged cycling performance of sodium metal battery employing high voltage cathodes (NVPF@C@CNT and NFMO) is attributed to uniform and dense sodium deposition along with the formation of fluorine and boron-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the sodium metal anode.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the outcomes of patients who experience post-operative atrial fibrillation (POAF) after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and the differences in oral anticoagulation (OAC) usage and its impacts.
  • It found that among a large group of CABG patients, POAF occurrence ranges between 7.9% and 37.6%, with only 15.5% receiving OAC treatment.
  • The results indicate that while thromboembolic events and mortality rates are generally low for POAF patients, OAC use significantly raises the risk of bleeding without reducing thromboembolic or mortality risks compared to non-users.

Phase separation and percolation contribute to phase transitions of multivalent macromolecules. Contributions of percolation are evident through the viscoelasticity of condensates and through the formation of heterogeneous distributions of nano- and mesoscale pre-percolation clusters in sub-saturated solutions. Here, we show that clusters formed in sub-saturated solutions of FET (FUS-EWSR1-TAF15) proteins are affected differently by glutamate versus chloride.
