Necrotizing enterocolitis is characterized by intestinal mucosal injury that can progress to transmural bowel necrosis, and radiologically it can present with either pneumatosis intestinalis or portal venous gas. The morbidity and mortality following pancreaticoduodenectomy have significantly reduced in recent times; it still remains unclear in elderly patients.
