Purpose Of Review: Approximately 3 billion people worldwide rely on coal and biomass fuel for cooking and heating. Biomass smoke exposure is associated with several chronic lung diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma-COPD overlap syndrome, usual interstitial pneumonitis, hut lung, and bronchial anthracofibrosis. Household air pollution primarily from biomass smoke is the biggest risk factor for COPD worldwide.

The effect of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) on nitrification was examined with samples from nitrifying enrichment cultures using three different approaches: by measuring substrate (ammonia) specific oxygen uptake rates (SOUR), by using RT-qPCR to quantify the transcripts of functional genes involved in nitrification, and by analysis of 16S rRNA sequences to determine changes in structure and activity of the microbial communities. The nitrifying bioreactor was operated as a continuous reactor with a 24 h hydraulic retention time. The samples were exposed in batch vessels to Cr(III) (10-300 mg/L) and Cr(VI) (1-30 mg/L) for a period of 12 h.

The serotonergic raphe nuclei are involved in regulating brain states over timescales of minutes and hours. We examined more rapid effects of raphe activation on two classes of principal neurons in the mouse olfactory bulb, mitral and tufted cells, which send olfactory information to distinct targets. Brief stimulation of the raphe nuclei led to excitation of tufted cells at rest and potentiation of their odor responses.

6-Gingerol, a potent nutraceutical, has been shown to have antitumor activity in different tumors, although its mechanism of action is not well understood. In this study, we evaluated antitumor activities of 6-gingerol on human oral (SCC4, KB) and cervical cancer (HeLa) cell lines with or without wortmannin, rapamycin, and cisplatin. Tumor cell proliferation was observed using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H tetrazolium, inner salt assay, cell cycle analysis by propidium iodide labeling and flow cytometry, apoptosis by Annexin-V binding assay, and caspase activity by chemiluminescence assay.

Therapeutic resistance is a major barrier to improvement of outcomes for patients with glioblastoma. The endoplasmic reticulum stress response (ERSR) has been identified as a contributor to chemoresistance in glioblastoma; however the contributions of the ERSR to radioresistance have not been characterized. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is the treatment of choice for gallstones, but is associated with increased risk of bile duct injury (BDI bile duct injury). If the BDI is detected during LC can be addressed immediately, if available hepatobiliary surgeon, but the easiest and safest procedure for the general surgeon is placing drains into subhepatic region and the transfer of acute BDI to controlled external biliary fistula (external Biliary fistula EBF). The gallbladder neck cancer and perihilar cholangiocarcinoma present as painless progressive surgical obstructive jaundice. Sometimes it becomes difficult to differentiate between them even on cross-sectional imaging studies including computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Staging laparoscopy and positron emission tomography may be useful in detecting metastases in gallbladder neck cancer, but are not recommended in perihilar cholangiocarcinoma.
