The concept of gene vectors for therapeutic applications has been known for several years, but it is far from revealing its actual potential. With the advent of hollow cylindrical carbon nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), researchers have invented several new tools to deliver genes at the required site of action in mammalian and plant cells. The ease of diversified functionalization has allowed CNTs to be by far the most adaptable non-viral vector for gene therapy.

We investigated the relationship between self-reported adherence to pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT), nutritional status, and all-cause hospitalization in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients with a record of PERT use. Association of self-reported annual PERT use rate (adherence) with annual hospital admission rate (HAR) and annual total hospital nights (THNs) were analyzed for 5301 children (2000-2012) and 13,989 adults (2000-2013) from the CF Foundation Patient Registry. Multivariate linear regression was used to determine the association of HAR and THN with mean annual PERT use rate, cumulative PERT use rate, mean body mass index (BMI) (adult) or BMI percentile (pediatric), age, and sex.

Background And Aims: More than 80% of delivered anesthetic gases get wasted at high fresh gas flows as they are vented out unused. Use of minimal flow anesthesia is associated with less waste anesthetic gas emission and environmental pollution. There is no approved or validated technique to initiate minimal flow anesthesia and simultaneously achieve denitrogenation of the breathing circuit.

Our objective was to evaluate whether IV immunoglobulin (IVIg) increases the risk of thromboembolic events in neurology outpatients with inflammatory neuropathies, as there is conflicting evidence supporting this hypothesis, mainly from non-neurologic cohorts. We investigated this question over 30 months in our cohort of patients with inflammatory neuropathies receiving regular IVIg and found a greater incidence of arterial and venous thromboembolic events than population-based rates determined by hospital admissions data. Vascular risk factors were more common in the event group but there were no IVIg administration factors that contributed to the risk.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by cartilage degradation and chronic joint inflammation. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have shown promising results in OA, but their mechanism of action is not fully understood. We hypothesize that MSCs polarize macrophages, which are strongly associated with joint inflammation to more homeostatic sub-types.

Differences in the connectivity of large-scale functional brain networks among individuals with alcohol use disorders (AUD), as well as those at risk for AUD, point to dysfunctional neural communication and related cognitive impairments. In this study, we examined how polygenic risk scores (PRS), derived from a recent GWAS of DSM-IV Alcohol Dependence (AD) conducted by the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium, relate to longitudinal measures of interhemispheric and intrahemispheric EEG connectivity (alpha, theta, and beta frequencies) in adolescent and young adult offspring from the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA) assessed between ages 12 and 31. Our findings indicate that AD PRS (-threshold < 0.
