Volatile organic compounds, colloquially referred to as "terpenes", have been proposed to impact the therapeutic qualities that are traditionally ascribed to cannabis. However, the contribution of these terpenes in anxiety, at relevant levels and exposure methods common with cannabis use, is lacking empirical assessment. We tested the anxiolytic properties of two prominent cannabis terpenes, linalool and β-myrcene, in male and female mice using short duration vapor pulls to model human inhalation when combusting flower or vaping cannabis oil.

Background: Computational modeling indicated that pathological high shear stress (HSS; 100 dyn/cm) is generated in pulmonary arteries (PAs; 100-500 µm) in congenital heart defects causing PA hypertension (PAH) and in idiopathic PAH with occlusive vascular remodeling. Endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT) is a feature of PAH. We hypothesize that HSS induces EndMT, contributing to the initiation and progression of PAH.

Introduction: The objective of this work was to determine the prevalence of Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) symptoms in plastic and aesthetic surgery consultations in a large cohort of patients presenting for initial consultations for various indications.
Results: We conducted a prospective, single-center cohort study between January 2022 and November 2022. A total of 1169 questionnaires were collected, and 842 patients were included in the study.
Background: In professional basketball, Jones fractures are among the most common cause of lower extremity stress injury. Despite its prevalence, there is a paucity of research on the impact of Jones fractures on athletic performance in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Purpose: To determine the impact of Jones fractures on return to play and performance among NBA players when compared with preinjury values and healthy matched controls.

The gustatory system allows animals to assess the nutritive value and safety of foods prior to ingestion. The first step in gustation is the interaction of taste stimuli with one or more specific sensory receptors, that are generally believed to be present on the apical surface of the taste receptor cells. However, this assertion is rarely tested.

To elucidate its role, we study fibroblasts from unaffected individuals and patients carrying the recurring c.328+1 G > T mutation, which specifically removes the main part of the G-patch domain while preserving the other domains.

Background: We sought to evaluate the use of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for the treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in a community hospital setting.
Methods: Data were analyzed among patients with lower extremity DVT who underwent MT from December 1, 2021 to December 1, 2022.
Results: A total of 1263 patients were evaluated and only 8.
Objectives: HLA DQA1*05 has been associated with the development of anti-drug antibodies (ADA) to tumor necrosis factor antagonists (anti-TNF) and treatment failure among adults with Crohn's disease (CD). However, findings from other studies have been inconsistent with limited pediatric data.
Methods: We analyzed banked serum from patients with CD < 21 years of age enrolled in COMBINE, a multi-center, prospective randomized trial of anti-TNF monotherapy vs.
Background: Higher drug levels and combination therapy with low-dose oral methotrexate (LD-MTX) may reduce anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) treatment failure in pediatric Crohn's disease. We sought to (1) evaluate whether combination therapy with LD-MTX was associated with higher anti-TNF levels, (2) evaluate associations between anti-TNF levels and subsequent treatment failure, and (3) explore the effect of combination therapy on maintenance of remission among patients with therapeutic drug levels (>5 µg/mL for infliximab and >7.5 µg/mL for adalimumab).

Background: The No Surprises Act (NSA) went into effect on January 1, 2022. This federal law is designed to minimize surprise bills for emergency care, out of network (OON) care, and care for uninsured or self-pay individuals. To achieve these goals, the NSA relies heavily on physicians providing cost estimates to patients prior to administering care.

Oxidative stress and blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption due to brain endothelial barrier dysfunction contribute to Alzheimer's Disease (AD), which is characterized by beta-amyloid (Aβ) accumulation in senile plaques. Copper (Cu) is implicated in AD pathology and its levels are tightly controlled by several Cu transport proteins. However, their expression and role in AD, particularly in relation to brain endothelial barrier function remains unclear.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA thioarylation method is developed for the synthesis of 2,3-dihydrothiopheniums through an electrophilic-cyclization-cross-coupling mechanism, harnessing the gold(I)/(III) cycle of the recently developed MeDalPhosAuCl catalyst. Single-crystal X-ray crystal structural analysis of the dihydrothiophenium products characterized the antiaddition of the sulfur and Csp group to the alkyne and a preference for 5-endo dig cyclization. The dihydrothiophenium products are demonstrated as synthetic building blocks for stereodefined acyclic tetrasubstituted alkenes upon ring-opening reaction with amines.

The current state of cardiac POCUS terminology is heterogeneous and ambiguous, in part because it evolved through siloed specialty practices. In particular, the medical literature and colloquial medical conversation contain a wide variety of terms that equate to cardiac POCUS.
