Background: The goal of the study is to use CT imaging in patients with aSAH to evaluate the anatomic distribution of hemorrhage and compartmentalization of subarachnoid space to investigate potential in vivo visualization of recently discovered layer named subarachnoid lymphatic-like membrane (SLYM).

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of cases with aneurysmal SAH (aSAH) at our institution between January 2015 and June 2022. Subarachnoid hemorrhage distribution into superficial and deep subarachnoid spaces was classified based on proximity to the dural or pial surfaces, respectively, as seen on multiplanar CT head.

Background: Sperm extraction by Microscopic Testicular Sperm Extraction (microTESE) has become the standard of care for sperm retrieval (SR) in men with non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) but is costly and has a 40-50% chance of failure. Fine needle aspiration mapping (FNAM) can be performed prior to microTESE as a predictor of success to reduce the likelihood of failure to retrieve sperm but there is limited evidence that directly compares these methods. The objective of this study was to compare success rate of SR, pregnancy, and live birth rates in men who underwent upfront microTESE versus FNAM.

The arrangement of chromosomes in the cell nucleus has implications for cell radiosensitivity. The development of new tools to utilize Hi-C chromosome conformation data in nanoscale radiation track structure simulations allows forinvestigation of this phenomenon. We have developed a framework employing Hi-C-based cell nucleus models in Monte Carlo radiation simulations, in conjunction with mechanistic models of DNA repair, to predict not only the initial radiation-induced DNA damage, but also the repair outcomes resulting from this damage, allowing us to investigate the role chromosome conformation plays in the biological outcome of radiation exposure.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on understanding radiotracer extravasation in PET imaging, an area that hasn't been thoroughly examined but could improve clinical practices.
  • It aims to quantify the absorbed radiation doses from extravasation both at the injection site and its effects on nearby organs, while also exploring the biological effects at the cellular level.
  • Utilizing advanced simulations, including GATE and TOPAS-nBio, the researchers modeled a common PET scan scenario to calculate radiation doses and assess potential DNA damage from radiation exposure within affected cells.

The management of hypertensive disease in pregnancy is currently guided by practice recommendations based largely on observational data from a half century ago and has changed only superficially since that time. These recommendations are both narrowly prescriptive (women without traditional features of severe disease should all be delivered at exactly 37 weeks) and at the same time frustratingly ambiguous (the presence of epigastric pain unresponsive to repeat analgesics precludes expectant management at any gestational age, regardless of laboratory studies). Guidelines that ignore recent data from the obstetric, pediatric, and internal medicine literature too often lead practitioners to be more aggressive than necessary in the delivery of very premature pregnancies, and, conversely, more complacent than patient safety would support in prolonging pregnancy with advanced fetal maturity.

Asset framing can enhance equity in feedback and assessment in medical education. It is said that what you find depends on how you see, and the narratives that we build in our minds can influence our judgement and our assessments when working with learners. Asset framing has been used in other fields, and found to be an effective tool to reduce bias and enhance equity.

X-linked dystonia-parkinsonism (XDP) is a severe neurodegenerative disorder resulting from an inherited intronic SINE-Alu-VNTR (SVA) retrotransposon in the gene that causes dysregulation of transcription. The specific mechanism underlying this dysregulation remains unclear, but it is hypothesized to involve the formation of G-quadruplexes (G4) structures within the XDP-SVA that impede transcription. In this study, we show that ZNF91, a critical repressor of SVA retrotransposons, specifically binds to G4-forming DNA sequences.

Background: A coded aperture X-ray diffraction (XRD) imaging system can measure the X-ray diffraction form factor from an object in three dimensions -X, Y and Z (depth), broadening the potential application of this technology. However, to optimize XRD systems for specific applications, it is critical to understand how to predict and quantify system performance for each use case.

Objective: The purpose of this work is to present and validate 3D spatial resolution models for XRD imaging systems with a detector-side coded aperture.

Cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) reflects the change in cerebral blood flow in response to vasodilatory stimuli enabling assessment of the health of the cerebral vasculature. Recent advances in the quantitative delivery of CO2 stimuli with computer-controlled sequential gas delivery have enabled mapping of the speed and magnitude of response to flow stimuli. These CVR advances when applied to patients with acute concussion have unexpectedly shown faster speed and greater magnitude of responses unseen in other diseases that typically show the opposite effects.

Phonetic variability across talkers imposes additional processing costs during speech perception, evident in performance decrements when listening to speech from multiple talkers. However, within-talker phonetic variation is a less well-understood source of variability in speech, and it is unknown how processing costs from within-talker variation compare to those from between-talker variation. Here, listeners performed a speeded word identification task in which three dimensions of variability were factorially manipulated: between-talker variability (single vs multiple talkers), within-talker variability (single vs multiple acoustically distinct recordings per word), and word-choice variability (two- vs six-word choices).
