Radon is a known risk factor for lung cancer; however, it can be used beneficially, such as in radon therapy. We have previously reported the enhancement of antioxidant effects associated with trace amounts of oxidative stress as one of the positive biological effects of radon inhalation. However, the biological effects of radon inhalation are incompletely understood, and more detailed and comprehensive studies are required.

  • Revision ACL reconstruction has a higher graft failure rate (13.0%) compared to primary surgery, with limited data available on the causes of this issue.
  • A study of 54 patients identified factors linked to graft failure, such as younger age at initial and revision surgeries, hyperextended knee, previous meniscectomy, smaller pre-revision space for the ACL, and larger preoperative anterior tibial translation.
  • The study established optimal thresholds for preoperative measurements that could help predict graft failure risk before revision surgery.

  • The study investigates how psychological factors like goal orientation and desire for approval relate to sports injury severity in young Japanese athletes.
  • A survey of 560 athletes revealed a positive correlation between task and ego orientation scores and found that those with severe injuries scored higher on both task orientation and desire for approval compared to non-injured athletes.
  • The findings suggest that athletes with high task orientation and a strong desire for approval may face a greater risk of experiencing serious injuries, highlighting the need for further research on motivational factors influencing injury risk.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined whether standardizing ankle stress sonography techniques would reduce measurement variability among different examiners.
  • Fourteen examiners with an average of 8.7 years of ultrasound experience used their preferred methods on three patients, followed by a standardized technique developed in a consensus meeting.
  • Results showed no significant difference in variability or measurement outcomes between the preferred and standardized techniques, indicating that standardization did not effectively reduce variability in ligament length measurements.

In breast cancer surgery, some medical facilities lack the necessary resources to conduct sentinel lymph node biopsy and its intraoperative frozen section consultation. In the coastal rural area of Fukushima, Japan, which has suffered from physician undersupply following the 2011 triple disaster of earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster, we explored the feasibility of telepathology by evaluating the diagnostic accuracy in remote intraoperative frozen section consultation of sentinel lymph node biopsy and its required time. Although examination time has room for improvement, telepathology can be one possible solution in resource-limited areas.
