Objective: To characterize findings in Shih Tzus with progressive superficial necrolytic dermatitis and degenerative vacuolar hepatopathy consistent with hepatocutaneous syndrome.
Design: Retrospective case series.
Animals: 31 Shih Tzus.
Whether boys are more vulnerable than girls to reading disabilities (RD) is controversial. We review studies that were designed to minimize ascertainment bias in the selection of individuals with RD. These include population-based studies that identified children with RD by objective, unbiased methods and studies that examined the gender ratios among the affected relatives of those diagnosed with RD.

Design: Case-control study.
Animals: 223 dogs with confirmed nonthyroidal diseases and presumptive normal thyroid function, and 150 clinically normal dogs.
The effect of daily doses of 5-15 mg of methimazole on the platelet count, prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), and proteins induced by vitamin K absence or antagonists (PIVKA) clotting time in 20 hyperthyroid cats was determined. No significant (P > .05) difference was found in median platelet count.

Design: Prospective case series.
Animals: 78 dogs with seizure disorders that did not have any evidence of a thyroid disorder (55 treated with phenobarbital alone, 15 treated with phenobarbital and bromide, and 8 treated with bromide alone) and 150 clinically normal dogs that were not receiving any medication.

Eleven patients were investigated before and 4 days after total hip replacement. The postoperative results were compared with those seen in major traumas and sepsis.

A percutaneous muscle biopsy was performed three to four days following major accidental injury in ten patients and analyzed for muscle free amino acids. Venous blood was drawn at the time of the biopsy and analyzed for plasma free amino acids.
