Purpose: We sought to assess a smartphone-based, gold nanoparticle-based colorimetric lateral flow immunoassay paper sensor for quantifying urine 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) as a biomarker for diabetic retinopathy (DR) screening.

Methods: Paper strips incorporate gold nanoparticle-8-OHdG antibody conjugates that produce color changes that are proportional to urine 8-OHdG and that are discernible on a smartphone camera photograph. Paper strip accuracy, precision, and stability studies were performed with 8-OHdG solutions of varying concentrations.

Poor transport of neuropharmaceutics through central nervous system (CNS) barriers limits the development of effective treatments for CNS disorders. We present the facile synthesis of a novel neuroinflammation-targeting polyethylene glycol-based dendrimer (PEGOL-60) using an efficient click chemistry approach. PEGOL-60 reduces synthetic burden by achieving high hydroxyl surface density at low generation, which plays a key role in brain penetration and glia targeting of dendrimers in CNS disorders.

The fundamental problem in axon growth and guidance is understanding how cytoplasmic signaling modulates the cytoskeleton to produce directed growth cone motility. Live imaging of the TSM1 axon of the developing wing has shown that the essential role of the core guidance signaling molecule, Abelson (Abl) tyrosine kinase, is to modulate the organization and spatial localization of actin in the advancing growth cone. Here, we dissect in detail the properties of that actin organization and its consequences for growth cone morphogenesis and motility.

The best outcomes after injury to the facial nerve are seen after immediate direct coaptation, but in practice, this happens infrequently. We ask whether late repair (between 3 weeks and 18 months) is comparable to immediate repair. In search of stable, yet reactive aluminum Lewis acids, we have isolated an organoaluminum cation, [(Me2NC6H4)2Al(C4H8O)2]+, coordinated with two labile tetrahydrofuran ligands. Its catalytic performance in aldehyde dimerization reveals turn-over frequencies reaching up to 6000 h-1, exceeding that of the reported main group catalysts. The cation is further demonstrated to catalyze hydroelementation of ketones.

We report the observation of backward stimulated Mie scattering (SMS) due to light-field induced spatial redistribution of self-assembled nanospheres of a two-photon resonant organic chromophore in water, pumped by ∼10-ns laser pulses of ∼816-nm wavelength. The pump-energy threshold for generating backward stimulated scattering in such a system is remarkably lower than that in pure water. The gain of backscattering originates from an induced Bragg grating that reflects partial energy from the pump beam into the backward Mie scattering beam.
