Ultrastructural imaging biomarkers in diabetic macular edema: A major review.

Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a vision-threatening complication of diabetic retinopathy and causes significant morbidity in patients. Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agents are the mainstay of treatment for DME, with steroid implants being used for the treatment of anti-VEGF resistant eyes. Over the years, several classification systems have been devised to describe the patterns of DME using optical coherence tomography (OCT).

Short-Term Endotamponade With Perfluorocarbon Liquids for Giant Retinal Tear-Associated Retinal Detachment.

To investigate the use of short-term postoperative endotamponade with perfluorocarbon liquids (PFCLs) for the treatment of giant retinal tear-associated rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). This retrospective study evaluated patients who had 2-stage surgery, which entailed pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) completed in 2 consecutive surgeries spaced 5 days apart, during which a short-term tamponade with PFCL was used (Group 1), and patients who had conventional single-stage PPV with long-term silicone oil (SO) tamponade (Group 2). The study comprised 74 eyes of 68 patients, 52 in Group 1 and 22 in Group 2.

Anatomical and functional outcome of surgical correction of optic disc pit maculopathy using autologous scleral patch graft: a long-term retrospective analysis.

Background: Optic disc pit (ODP) is a rare congenital anomaly of optic nerve head and is associated with maculopathy. Scleral patch graft (SPG) as a therapeutic option is recently advocated.

Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of 54 patients with ODP maculopathy who were followed up for 12 months post-operatively.

Enhanced cell survival in prepubertal testicular tissue cryopreserved with membrane lipids and antioxidants rich cryopreservation medium.

The present study explores the advantages of enriching the freezing medium with membrane lipids and antioxidants in improving the outcome of prepubertal testicular tissue cryopreservation. For the study, testicular tissue from Swiss albino mice of prepubertal age group (2 weeks) was cryopreserved by slow freezing method either in control freezing medium (CFM; containing DMSO and FBS in DMEM/F12) or test freezing medium (TFM; containing soy lecithin, phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylethanolamine, cholesterol, vitamin C, sodium selenite, DMSO and FBS in DMEM/F12 medium) and stored in liquid nitrogen for at least one week. The tissues were thawed and enzymatically digested to assess viability, DNA damage, and oxidative stress in the testicular cells.

Anatomic and Visual Outcomes of Scleral Buckle in Primary Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment in the Era of Pars Plana Vitrectomy.

To determine the presenting clinical characteristics of patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) who underwent scleral buckling and the impact on final visual outcomes and to determine the postoperative primary attachment rate, complications, and subsequent management. This retrospective observational study comprised patients with RRD who had scleral buckling surgery from January 2016 to December 2021 with a minimum follow-up of 6 months. The study comprised 307 eyes of 290 patients; 97% of eyes were phakic.

Background: The creation of relief camps following a disaster, conflict or other form of externality often generates additional health problems. The density of people in a highly stressed environment with questionable safe food and water access presents the potential for infectious disease outbreaks. These camps are also not static data events but rather fluctuate in size, composition, and level and quality of service provision.

We report a case of mucocele of the lower lip in a 17-year-old female patient. She complained of a painless swelling on her lower lip for the last one month. The patient also gave a history of lip-biting.

Sexual dimorphism and the impact of aging on ball rolling-associated locomotor behavior in Drosophila.

Insects exhibit a remarkable ability to interact with inanimate objects to facilitate essential behaviors such as foraging, reproduction, shelter building, and defense. In this study, we assessed whether Drosophila interacted with inanimate objects when they were suspended on their wings and provided with a thermocol ball (foam ball). Drosophila indeed exhibited ball rolling behavior.

Macular hole associated Retinal Detachment in presumed Autosomal Recessive Bestrophinopathy (ARB)- A retrospective observational series of two cases.

Purpose: Surgical outcome of presumed Autosomal Recessive Bestrophinopathy (ARB)with full thickness macular hole and retinal detachment managed by pars plana vitrectomy.

Methods: A retrospective observational case series of two eyes of two patients who underwent 25 G pars plana vitrectomy with peeling of internal limiting membrane and SF6 tamponade and were assessed with respect to best corrected visual acuity, fundus photographs and spectral domain optical coherence tomography.

Results: Type 1 closure of macular hole was achieved along with resolution of retinal detachment in both patients.

Oral toxicity assessment and the mitigation of lung carcinogenesis by phytol and α-bisabolol combination treatment in swiss albino mice: insights into redox enzyme modulation and caspase-dependent cell death mechanisms.

This study examined the safety and potential anti-lung cancer effects of combinations of phytol and α-bisabolol in Swiss albino mice. Both acute and subacute toxicity assessments showed that the combination of phytol and α-bisabolol is safe, with no adverse effects observed at higher concentrations. Hematological, biochemical, and histopathological tests showed no signs of toxicity in the heart, lungs, liver, spleen, and kidneys.

Methods: Data from 326 older adults with heart conditions, drawn from the Health and Retirement Study, were analyzed.

Purpose: Ionizing radiation-based technologies are extensively used in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. While utilizing the technologies, exposure to a certain amount of radiation is unavoidable. Data can be obtained from participants who received radiation during medical imaging and therapeutic purposes to predict the effects of low-dose radiation.

Liposome-based Freezing Medium Improves the Outcome of Mouse Prepubertal Testicular Tissue Cryopreservation.

Cryopreservation of testicular tissue holds an important role in the field of fertility preservation, particularly for prepubertal boys diagnosed with cancer. However, prepubertal testicular tissue cryopreservation is still considered to be in the experimental stage necessitating the refinement of cryopreservation protocol. Considering the fact that loss of membrane lipids is the primary cause of freeze-thaw-induced loss of testicular cell functions, in this study, we explored the beneficial properties of exogenous supplementation of membrane lipids in the form of liposomes in enhancing the cryosurvival of prepubertal testicular tissue.

A role for the circadian photoreceptor CRYPTOCHROME in regulating triglyceride metabolism in Drosophila.

The biological rhythms generated by the endogenous circadian clocks across the tree of life regulate numerous behavioral, metabolic, and physiological processes. Although evidence from various studies in Drosophila melanogaster indicates the importance of the core circadian clock genes in the intricate interplay between the circadian clock and metabolism, little is known about the contribution of the circadian photoreceptor/s in this process. The deep brain circadian photoreceptor CRYPTOCHROME (CRY) is essential for resetting the clock in response to light and is also highly expressed in metabolically active tissues in Drosophila.

An algae-based polymer material as a pesticide adjuvant for mitigating off-target drift.

Off-target pesticide drift from cropland is a major source of pesticide exposure to pollinating insects inhabiting crop and wildlands in the lower Mississippi Delta (LMD) in the USA. This study is aimed to develop a drift-reducing pesticide adjuvant that is less/nontoxic to honeybees. Ongoing toxicology experiments with two widely-used insecticides and sodium alginate (SA) pointed out reductions in honeybee mortality compared to an industry standard reference polyacrylamide (PAM).

Background: The clinical use of antimicrobial agents for managing aphthous ulcers and periodontal diseases has long been a subject of intensive research by numerous investigators. Intranasal Vaccination with Recombinant TLR2-Active Outer Membrane Vesicles Containing Sequential M2e Epitopes Protects against Lethal Influenza a Challenge.

Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory disease, resulting in an estimated 3 to 5 million cases of severe illness annually. While most influenza vaccines are administered parenterally via injection, one shortcoming is that they do not generate a strong immune response at the site of infection, which can become important in a pandemic. Intranasal vaccines can generate both local and systemic protective immune responses, can reduce costs, and enhance ease of administration.

Diversity of post-translational modifications and cell signaling revealed by single cell and single organelle mass spectrometry.

The rapid evolution of mass spectrometry-based single-cell proteomics now enables the cataloging of several thousand proteins from single cells. We investigated whether we could discover cellular heterogeneity beyond proteome, encompassing post-translational modifications (PTM), protein-protein interaction, and variants. By optimizing the mass spectrometry data interpretation strategy to enable the detection of PTMs and variants, we have generated a high-definition dataset of single-cell and nuclear proteomic-states.

The Utility of CD43 and CD200 in Differentiating Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia from Other Mature B-Cell Neoplasms: A Cross Sectional Study.

To evaluate the utility of CD43 and CD200 in differentiating chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) from other mature B-cell neoplasms. This was a cross-sectional study on patients diagnosed with B-cell neoplasms on flowcytometry. The median fluorescence intensity (MFI) of CD43, CD200 expressing neoplastic B-cells were compared between the CLL and non-CLL B-cell neoplasms followed by receiver operating characreristic curve (ROC) analysis.

A retrospective analysis of surgical outcome in sutureless glueless scleral fixation of foldable intraocular lens.

Introduction: Cataract surgery constitutes one of the highest volume surgeries performed worldwide approximating 10 million annually, varying from 100 to 6000 per million population. Implantation of scleral fixated intra-ocular lens (SFIOL) is getting popular in managing difficult situations like aphakia, subluxated lens, and dislocated cataracts.

Objective: This retrospective series evaluated our experience with foldable 3-piece acrylic SFIOL implantation for various challenging surgical scenarios in a tertiary care ophthalmic institute in the southern part of India.

Background: Helicobacter pylori (H pylori), a bacterium characterized by its spiral shape and gram-negative nature, impacts approximately half of the global population, showing a greater prevalence in developing nations. There are various factors that contribute to the pathogenicity of H pylori in the gastric mucosa, leading to gastric ulcer, gastritis and gastric cancers. The relationship between H pylori and gastric cancers has been well documented.
