Reactive oxygen species (ROS) production is a key early defense mechanism in plants when exposed to biotic stress. Upon recognition of conserved microbe-associated molecular patterns (MAMPs) from pathogens by plant receptors, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidases in the plasma membrane are activated to produce hydrogen peroxide (HO). This, in turn, regulates multiple signaling pathways to trigger immunity and suppress pathogen infection.

This partnership is rooted in the plant's ability to recognize fungal signaling molecules, such as chitooligosaccharides (chitin) and lipo-chitooligosaccharides. In the legume Medicago truncatula, chitooligosaccharides trigger both symbiotic and immune responses via the same lysin-motif-receptor-like kinases (LysM-RLKs), notably CERK1 and LYR4.
