Cumulative Burden of Lifestyle Risk Factors on Cancer in Older Korean Men: A Nationwide Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background/objectives: Cancer prevalence is increasing globally due to aging populations. Certain lifestyles are associated with cancer; however, the long-term combined effects of lifestyle factors on cancer has not been investigated. This study aimed to investigate the cumulative effect of lifestyle risk factors over 8 years on cancer in older Korean men.

Association of Sedentary Lifestyle with Skeletal Muscle Strength and Mass in US Adolescents: Results from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011-2014).

Objective: Excessive sedentary behavior in youth is a major global issue, contributing to the rise in childhood obesity and metabolic diseases. International public health authorities have issued guidelines recommending that children and adolescents limit their daily sedentary time, including screen time. However, to date, no studies have explored the relationship between sedentary behavior as an exposure factor and skeletal muscle strength and mass as outcomes in this population.

Comparison of Synovialization and Clinical Outcomes between Anterior Cruciate Ligament Anteromedial Bundle Augmentation and Double-Bundle Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

This study aimed to compare clinical outcomes and second-look arthroscopic findings between double-bundle anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction for complete ACL rupture and anteromedial (AM) bundle augmentation with preservation of the posterolateral (PL) bundle in isolated AM bundle rupture. Between 2014 and 2021, we retrospectively analyzed 95 ACL reconstructions with at least 2 years of follow-up. Patients undergoing primary ACL reconstruction from January 2014 to June 2021 were included in the study.

Factors Associated with Metabolically Unhealthy Obesity and Its Relation to Food Insecurity in Korean Adults with Obesity.

Objectives: The association between food insecurity and metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO) in the population with obesity is unclear. We evaluated factors associated with MUO and the relationship between food insecurity and MUO in individuals with obesity.

Methods: We analyzed data from 5191 adults with obesity (body mass index ≥ 25 kg/m) from the 8th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2019-2021.

Relationship Between the Risk of Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Cardiovascular Health in Middle-Aged Korean Men and Women: A Nationwide Study.

Cardiovascular health (CVH) can be conceptualized as encompassing seven health behaviors and metabolic factors that contribute to cardiovascular disease. We explored the relationship between the risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and CVH among middle-aged Korean adults. Data from 5909 participants, aged between 40 and 64 years, in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2019-2021) were analyzed.

Clinical effect on major trauma patients during simultaneous or overlapping presentations at an urban level I trauma center in Korea.

Objective: Overcrowding in an emergency department (ED) or intensive care unit (ICU) of the trauma center (TC) is an important issue for timely acute health care of a critically injured patient. Accumulated scientific evidence has indicated the negative influence of overcrowding to the process and clinical outcome of trauma care.

Method: The institutional trauma registry at an urban level I TC was retrospectively evaluated for 5 years (2018-2022).

Age and gender effects on striatal dopamine transporter density and cerebral perfusion in individuals with non-degenerative parkinsonism: a dual-phase F-FP-CIT PET study.

Background: Dual-phase fluorine-18 labeled N-3-fluoropropyl-2β-carbomethoxy-3β-(4-iodophenyl) nortropane (F-FP-CIT) positron emission tomography (PET) scans could be used to support disorders like Parkinson's disease (PD). Dopamine transporter (DAT) binding and cerebral perfusion are associated with ageing and gender. We investigated the effects of age and gender on non-degenerative parkinsonism, using automated quantification in striatum: specific binding ratios (SBRs) for DAT binding in delayed phase PET (dCIT) and standardized-uptake-value ratios (SUVRs) for cerebral perfusion in early phase PET (eCIT).

Radiopharmaceuticals for Skeletal Muscle PET Imaging.

The skeletal muscles account for approximately 40% of the body weight and are crucial in movement, nutrient absorption, and energy metabolism. Muscle loss and decline in function cause a decrease in the quality of life of patients and the elderly, leading to complications that require early diagnosis. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) offers non-invasive, high-resolution visualization of tissues.

A Case Study of Stress-Induced Alopecia Areata Treated with Hominis Placenta Pharmacopunture.

The purpose of this study is to report the clinical application of Hominis Placenta Pharmacopunture for Alopecia areata. Patient was diagnosed as stress-induced Alopecia areata 1 years ago. To reduce symptom, we treated a patient 8 times using Hominis Placenta Pharmacopunture.

Coordinated ASBT and EGFR Mechanisms for Optimized Liraglutide Nanoformulation Absorption in the GI Tract.

Background: For maintenance therapy in type 2 diabetes, glucagon-like peptide-1 agonist (GLP-1A), which exhibits low cardiovascular risk and high efficacy, is a promising peptide therapeutic. However, developing an oral GLP-1A presents challenges due to the analog's poor cellular permeability and gastrointestinal (GI) stability.

Methods: To mitigate such limitations, an oral nanoformulation of liraglutide (LG) was designed and achieved by combining LG with bile acid derivatives using the nanoprecipitation method.

COVID-19 Outcome and Tobacco Product Use: Case-Control and Retrospective Cohort Studies Using Nationwide Samples.

Background: Conflicting evidence exists regarding the association between smoking and the risk of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. We investigated the association between combustible cigarette (CC) smoking, noncombustible tobacco product (NCTP) use, and the use of any tobacco product with various coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outcomes.

Methods: A case-control study was conducted using the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency-COVID19-National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) cohort.

Saengmaeksan, a traditional polyherbal formulation containing Panax ginseng, improves energy metabolism during exercise.

Saengmaeksan (SMS), a representative oriental medicine that contains Panax ginseng Meyer, Liriope muscari, and Schisandra chinensis (1:2:1), is used to improve body vitality and enhance physical activity. However, there is limited scientific evidence to validate the benefits of SMS. Here, we investigated the in vitro and in vivo regulatory effects of SMS and its constituents on energy metabolism and the underlying molecular mechanisms.

Efficacy of preoperative lymphoscintigraphy in predicting surgical outcomes of lymphaticovenous anastomosis in lower extremity lymphedema: Clinical correlations in gynecological cancer-related lymphedema.

Background: Lymphaticovenous anastomosis (LVA) is a promising microsurgical treatment for lower extremity lymphedema (LEL). Lymphoscintigraphy effectively assesses lower limb lymphatic systems before LVA, but its role in predicting the therapeutic outcomes of LVA is indeterminate. In this study we investigate the efficacy of preoperative lymphoscintigraphy using clinical findings to predict outcomes in gynecological cancer-related LEL patients who underwent LVA.

Objectives: Presbyphagia refers to age-related changes in the swallowing mechanism (e.g., reduced skeletal muscle strength that decreases bolus control).

Value of Quantitative Salivary Gland SPECT/CT for the Detection of Saliva Leakage.

A 47-year-old woman presented to our emergency department with a 10-day history of pain, halitosis, and swelling below the left jaw. The patient was diagnosed with left sialadenitis and left submandibular abscess by tissue biopsy. An otolaryngologist performed transcervical incision and drainage of the abscess 1 day after admission.

The added value of SPECT/CT lymphoscintigraphy in the initial assessment of secondary extremity lymphedema patients.

An added value of SPECT/CT over planar lymphoscintigraphy for initial staging in patients with secondary extremity lymphedema was investigated. Furthermore, we developed a hybrid SPECT/CT classification combining dermal backflow (DBF) of SPECT and honeycomb pattern (HP) of CT, correlated it with lymphoscintigraphic staging and clinical severity. Forty-one patients with secondary extremity lymphedema who underwent lymphoscintigraphy with SPECT/CT were included retrospectively.

Integrated Water-Level Sensor Using Thin-Film Transistor Technology.

A low-cost water-level sensor was developed utilizing a capacitive sensor design with only one thin-film transistor (TFT). The integration of the a-IGZO TFT process facilitated the complete integration of the water-level sensor on a substrate, including essential components, such as the transistor, capacitor, wires, and sensing electrode. This integration eliminates the need for a separate mounting process, resulting in a robust sensor assembly.

The Effects of Acupuncture on Crohn's Disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Objectives: Crohn's disease is a chronic gastrointestinal disease that belongs to inflammatory bowel disease. This systematic review aims to assess the level of evidence in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the effects of acupuncture for Crohn's disease.

Methods: We searched 12 databases from the date of the establishment of each database up to May, 2023 for relevant RCTs.

Association between weight loss agents and elevated liver enzymes: a population-based cross-sectional study.

The widespread use of body weight control agents might be related to liver enzyme elevation, but this potential association has only been documented in a few case reports. This study aimed to investigate the associations between weight loss agents and elevated liver enzymes at the population-level. We conducted a cross-sectional study using Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) data from 2013 to 2019.

Experience of Lifetime Health Maintenance Program: An Observational Study of a 30-Year Period of Outpatient Primary Care in a Tertiary Hospital.

Background: This study aimed to identify the clinical content of patients registered with the Lifetime Health Maintenance Program (LHMP) under the care of a single family physician who introduced and operated the program in Korea at a tertiary hospital for over 30 years.

Methods: We analyzed the electronic medical records of 745 patients who had registered for more than 3 times with the LHMP under the care of a single family physician between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2019. We reviewed medical records from June 1989, when the hospital was established, to February 2022.

Salivary Gland Uptake on F-FP-CIT PET as a New Biomarker in Patients With Parkinsonism.

Objective: F-FP-CIT positron emission tomography (PET) is known for its high sensitivity and specificity for evaluating striatal dopamine transporter (DAT) binding. Recently, for the early diagnose of Parkinson's disease, many researchers focused on the diagnosis of synucleinopathy in organs involved in non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease. We investigated the feasibility of salivary gland uptake on F-FP-CIT PET as a new biomarker in patients with parkinsonism.

In vivo tissue pharmacokinetics of ERBB2-specific binding oligonucleotide-based drugs by PET imaging.

Although aptamers have shown excellent target specificity in preclinical and clinical studies either by themselves or as aptamer-drug conjugates, their in vivo tissue pharmacokinetic (PK) analysis is still problematic. We aimed to examine the utility of image-based positron emission tomography (PET) to evaluate in vivo tissue PK, target specificity, and applicability of oligonucleotides. For this, fluorine-18-labeled aptamers with erb-b2 receptor tyrosine kinase 2 (ERBB2)-specific binding were synthesized by base-pair hybridization using a complementary oligonucleotide platform.
