The corticospinal tract plays a major role in the control of voluntary limb movements, and its damage impedes voluntary limb control. We investigated the feasibility of closed-loop brain-controlled subdural spinal stimulation through a corticospinal interface for the modulation of wrist torque in the paralyzed forearm of monkeys with spinal cord injury at C4/C5. Subdural spinal stimulation of the preserved cervical enlargement activated multiple muscles on the paralyzed forearm and wrist torque in the range from flexion to ulnar-flexion.

Spinal stimulation is a promising method to restore motor function after impairment of descending pathways. While paresis, a weakness of voluntary movements driven by surviving descending pathways, can benefit from spinal stimulation, the effects of descending commands on motor outputs produced by spinal stimulation are unclear. Here, we show that descending commands amplify and shape the stimulus-induced muscle responses and torque outputs.

Autonomic dysfunction in diabetes is serious but often underestimated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate hemodynamics within the important initial phase just after standing, which cannot be evaluated by conventional instruments for orthostatic hypotension. Congenital syphilis (CS) is a public health burden in both developing and developed countries. We report two cases of CS in premature neonates with severe clinical manifestations; Patient 1 (gestational age 31 weeks, birth weight 1423 g) had disseminated idiopathic coagulation (DIC) while Patient 2 (gestational age 34 weeks and 6 days, birth weight 2299 g) had refractory syphilitic meningitis. Aims: Whether the titer of glutamic acid decarboxylase antibodies (GADAs), especially a low titer, is a marker of progression of beta cell dysfunction in patients with slowly progressive insulin-dependent (type 1) diabetes (SPIDDM) is unclear.

Materials And Methods: Patients were subdivided as follows: patients with high GADA titers [≥10 U/ml (≥180 WHO U/ml): high GADA] (group 1,  = 37); those with low GADA titers [<10 U/ml (<180 WHO U/ml): low GADA] (group 2,  = 33); those without GADA and with islet cell antibodies (ICA) (group 3,  = 8); those without both GADA and ICA and with insulinoma-associated antigen 2 antibodies (IA-2A) (group 4,  = 6). Detection of platelet activation in vivo is useful to identify patients at risk of thrombotic diseases. Background: Many neonatal intensive care and maternal units still use self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) devices as a tool to aid diagnosis despite the introduction of point-of-care testing (POCT) devices, which are known to have higher accuracy. We evaluated the performance of two glucose meters, the StatStrip (Nova Biomedical), a POCT device, and the Medisafe Mini (Terumo), an SMBG device, to detect hypoglycemia in neonates. Ignition experiments from various sources, including our own laboratory, have been used to develop a simple four-step, pressure-dependent ignition model for PBX 9502, which is composed of 95% by mass triaminotrinitrobenzene (TATB) and a 5% by mass chlorotrifluoroethylene/vinylidine fluoride binder. The four-steps include drying, mono-furazan formation, and decomposition of mono-furazan and TATB into equilibrium products. Our experiments were both sealed and vented and included various ullage percentages ranging from 18% to 75% of unfilled confinement volume.

Thyroid hormone receptor α (TRα) is critical to postnatal pancreatic β-cell maintenance. To investigate the association between TRα and the survival of pancreatic β-cells under endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, the expression of endogenous TRα was inhibited by infection with an adenovirus expressing double-stranded short hairpin RNA against TRα (AdshTRα). In control adenovirus-infected pancreatic β-cells, palmitate enhanced the expression of activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4) and heme oxygenase 1, which facilitates adaptation to oxidative ER stress.

A mesophilic, anaerobic, cellulolytic and xylanolytic strain, UasXn-3T, was isolated from anaerobic granular sludge in a mesophilic upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor, which was used to treat municipal sewage. The cells were Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, and non-spore-forming rods. The optimal temperature for growth was 37-40 °C and the optimal pH for growth was pH 6.
