Article Synopsis
  • Wilson disease is a rare genetic disorder that leads to excessive copper accumulation in various organs, and penicillamine is a key treatment that can cause serious skin reactions.
  • A case involving a 41-year-old man with Wilson disease showed localized cutis laxa (CL) after long-term use of penicillamine, with skin changes noticed in the neck area.
  • The findings suggest that prolonged penicillamine treatment might cause localized CL through interference with collagen fiber connections.

Introduction: Treatment of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is challenging, and in Hurley stage I, it is based on topical measures. Our aim was to compare the efficacy and safety of topical resorcinol 10% with topical clindamycin 1% and no therapy, in Hurley stage I HS.

Methods: In this open, prospective, randomized trial, we studied 60 Hurley stage I patients with IHS4 ≤10.

Background: Psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis are chronic inflammatory skin and joint diseases requiring effective therapies. Although clinical studies have shown the efficacy of IL-23 inhibitors, real-world data are limited.

Methods: We conducted a single-center retrospective Greek study enrolling patients with psoriatic arthritis and moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis being treated at our multidisciplinary psoriasis outpatient clinic.

  • The study focused on the effectiveness of a new emollient formulation (Lipikar baume AP+M) designed to improve skin conditions like atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and xerosis, which cause discomfort and reduce quality of life in patients.
  • Conducted with 1,399 adults over two months, the research included clinical assessments and questionnaires assessing the treatment's impact on skin symptoms and overall quality of life.
  • Results showed over 90% of patients experienced significant improvement in skin conditions, with an 82.6% enhancement in quality of life reported after two months of using the formulation.

Acute Localized Exanthematous Pustulosis (ALEP) is a rare skin reaction characterized by the sudden onset of multiple, small, sterile, non-follicular pustules in an erythematous and edematous base succeeding systemic drug administration. ALEP is considered a subtype of Acute Generalized Exanthematous Pustulosis (AGEP), although the exact pathogenic mechanism of the disease remains poorly defined. Numerous drugs have been implicated in the pathogenesis of ALEP, while contact mechanisms have also been reported.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common inflammatory skin disease with a complex pathophysiology, intertwining immune dysregulation, epidermal barrier dysfunction, IgE sensitization, environmental factors and genetic predisposition. It has been recently identified that interleukins -4 and -13 play crucial roles in the type-2-driven inflammation that characterizes AD, contributing to its symptomatology. Novel therapeutic approaches that target Th2 cytokines and their respective pathways have been developed, aiming to optimize the treatment of AD.

Article Synopsis
  • TNF-α inhibitors like adalimumab are effective for treating hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), but can sometimes lead to paradoxical psoriasis in patients.
  • A study described 4 middle-aged patients with HS who developed new or worsened psoriasis after at least 5 months of adalimumab treatment; all had a long history of HS and some risk factors like smoking and obesity.
  • The exact cause of this paradoxical reaction is not fully understood, highlighting the need for more reports on such cases to improve knowledge in this area.

Basosquamous carcinoma (BSC) is a relatively rare type of neoplasm originating from basal cell carcinoma with features of squamous differentiation. BSC has an aggressive local behaviour with a tendency for recurrence and a less frequent metastatic potential The primary objective was to describe the dermatoscopic features of the tumour. Secondary goals were to detect the morphological features of the tumour along with patients' characteristics and to evaluate possible dermatoscopic and histopathological correlations Twenty-two patients with 25 BSCs were enrolled.

Background: In the era of precision medicine, identification of possible predictive factors of clinical response to treatment is fundamental. This need is particularly strong for anogenital warts (AGW), because there are several treatment modalities with different clearance and recurrence rates. However, data regarding the effect of mental health parameters on response to treatment in patients with AGW are lacking.

Background: Studies comparing head-to-head treatment modalities for anogenital warts are lacking.

Aim: We sought to compare a short, 8-week course of imiquimod 5% cream to versus the standard 4 week course of podophyllotoxin in the treatment of anogenital warts and to assess factors that may affect response to treatment.

Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study.

HPV is associated with malignancy in men, yet there is a lack of data on HPV knowledge, vaccine acceptability, and factors affecting vaccine acceptability in Greek men. This study aims to identify determinants of knowledge and willingness to vaccinate against HPV among high-risk Greek men. Men (n = 298) between the ages of 18 and 55 were enrolled from the STI and HIV clinics at "Andreas Syggros" Hospital in Athens, Greece from July-October 2015.

Reactive arthritis (ReA) is an immune-mediated seronegative arthritis that belongs to the group of spondyloarthropathies and develops after a gastrointestinal or genitourinary system infection. The condition is considered to be characterized by a triad of symptoms (conjunctivitis, arthritis and urethritis) although a constellation of other manifestations may also be present. ReA is characterized by psoriasiform dermatological manifestations that may resemble those of pustular psoriasis and, similar to guttate psoriasis, is a post-infectious entity.

  • - A 48-year-old Caucasian woman developed asymptomatic skin changes on her forearms and showed signs of Poikiloderma of Civatte and rosacea on her face.
  • - She had a history of practicing aromatherapy, and tests showed she had allergic reactions to fragrance and nickel.
  • - The case suggests that her condition, termed extracervical Poikiloderma, may be linked to contact sensitization from fragrances, which is considered rare.

Introduction: Biological therapy for psoriasis exerts its action via an immunomodulatory and eventually immunosuppressive mode. Immunosuppression is linked to HPV flares. Our purpose is to investigate a possible relationship between infliximab therapy for psoriasis and human papilloma virus and molluscum (HPV/MC) infections.

Background: Psoriasis is a chronic, systemic, inflammatory disease. Inflammatory markers are used in clinical practice to detect acute inflammation, and as markers of treatment response. Etanercept blocks tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α, which plays a central role in the psoriatic inflammation process.

Biologics, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) antagonists, have revolutionized treatment of several significant inflammatory autoimmune diseases. Nevertheless, issues concerning long-term safety remain to be clarified. There is growing evidence linking biological treatments with the occurrence of malignancies or reactivation of latent ones, including malignant melanoma.
