The Impact of Food Insecurity on Child Health.

Food insecurity (FI) has severe implications on children's health and their future health outcomes. Children with FI have limited access to healthy foods and demonstrate poorer eating behavior, leading to chronic absenteeism, school failure, and chronic disease. Given the health implications of FI, it is imperative for pediatricians to screen all children, and advocate for protecting necessary nutritional programs that exist to mitigate FI and for improved accessibility of nutritious, healthy food options, especially in locations labeled as food deserts.

Frequency of Food Insecurity and Associated Health Outcomes in Pediatric Patients at a Federally Qualified Health Center.

Population: The present study was designed to identify the prevalence of FI and the association of household FI with the health status of pediatric patients seen at a Federally Qualified Health Center in New Jersey which provides health care mainly for Latino patients.

Hypercalcemia, hyperkalemia and supraventricular tachycardia in a patient with subcutaneous fat necrosis.

Background: Subcutaneous fat necrosis (SCFN) is a rare, self-limiting condition that has been associated with several complications including hypercalcemia.

Case Presentation: We present the case of a 6-week-old male who presented to his pediatrician with a dime-sized erythematous nodule consistent with SCFN, who was also found to have supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). Laboratory findings revealed hypercalcemia and hyperkalemia.

Exogenous and endogenous attention during perceptual learning differentially affect post-training target thresholds.

There is conflicting evidence in the literature regarding the role played by attention in perceptual learning. To further examine this issue, we independently manipulated exogenous and endogenous attention and measured the rate of perceptual learning of oriented Gabor patches presented in different quadrants of the visual field. In this way, we could track learning at attended, divided-attended, and unattended locations.
