Background: Transbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA) performed with a 19-gauge needle provides both cytologic and histologic specimens. However, the diagnostic yield for malignancy gained by histologic examination is unclear. Moreover, this kind of needle is often reserved only for selected cases, in part due to fear for complications.

It consists of two main components which include a RNA subunit (h-TERC) and a catalytic protein subunit (h-TERT). Similarly, amplification or deletion correlating with overexpression of c-myc is a common event in various neoplasias, including non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC).

The aim of our study was to investigate whether a panel of five different antibodies can offer reliable markers in the differential diagnosis of RM, AC, and MM in serous effusions. A total of 134 cytological specimens of serous effusions from 80 ACs, 50 RMs, and 4 MMs, previously stained with Papanicolaou stain, were selected retrospectively from our files and stained with anti-human mesothelial cell (HBME-1), calretinin, epithelial specific antigen (MOC-31), Ber-EP4, and BG8.

Cases tested included 30 benign (nine colloid goitres, six cases of Hashimoto's thyroiditis, six Hürthle cell adenomas, nine follicular adenomas) and 33 malignant lesions (nine follicular carcinomas, 12 papillary carcinomas, nine anaplastic carcinomas, three medullary carcinomas). All cases with malignant lesions except the anaplastic carcinomas were positive for HMFG2.

EGFR positivity, high PC10 score and vimentin positivity were significantly correlated with high histologic grade. The coordinate expression of EGFR, PCNA and vimentin was significantly associated with ER-negative breast carcinomas.
