Distribution of virulence markers among Vibrio vulnificus isolates of clinical and environmental origin and regional characteristics in Japan.

Background: Vibrio vulnificus is an opportunistic human pathogen that is widely distributed in estuarine environments and is capable of causing necrotizing fasciitis and sepsis. In Japan, based on epidemiological research, the incidences of V. vulnificus were concentrated in Kyusyu, mainly in coastal areas of the Ariake Sea.

Testicular nocardiosis accompanied by cutaneous lesions in an immunocompetent man.

We herein report the case of a 77-year-old man admitted for an acute cutaneous infection and persistent fever. A physical examination revealed systemic small blisters and scrotal swelling. He was suspected of having complications from chickenpox or bullous impetigo as the initial diagnosis.

Characteristics of a cylindrical collector mirror for laser-produced xenon plasma soft X-rays and improvement of mirror lifetime by buffer gas.

The focusing characteristics of a ruthenium-coated cylindrical mirror were investigated on the basis of its ability to collect and focus broadband 5-17-nm soft X-rays emitted from a laser-produced plasma. Based on the plasmas spectral intensity distribution and the reflectivity function of the mirror, we defined the optimum position of the integrated cylindrical mirror at which the X-ray energy flux transported and focused through the mirror was maximum. A minimum spot diameter of 22 mm at a distance of approximately 200 mm from a soft X-ray source was confirmed.

Surgical treatment for an asymptomatic and unruptured sinus of Valsalva aneurysm: report of a case.

A 70-year-old male underwent a transthoracic echocardiography as a screening test for hypertension and an unruptured aneurysm was detected in the right sinus of Valsalva. The right sinus of Valsalva aneurysm obstructed the right ventricle outflow tract but he did not have any symptoms. The sinus of Valsalva aneurysm was treated successfully by a patch closure with a bovine pericardial patch.

Propranolol as an alternative treatment option for pediatric lymphatic malformation.

Lymphatic malformation (LM), which was previously termed lymphangioma, is a rare congenital malformation of the lymphatic system and its treatment is still challenging. Propranolol (beta blocker) has been recently developed as a first-line treatment of infantile hemangioma. Our study aimed to assess the effect of propranolol on pediatric LM and the relationship between its effectiveness and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) family members (VEGF-A, C and D).

In vivo evaluation of an in-body, tissue-engineered, completely autologous valved conduit (biovalve type VI) as an aortic valve in a goat model.

Using simple, safe, and economical in-body tissue engineering, autologous valved conduits (biovalves) with the sinus of Valsalva and without any artificial support materials were developed in animal recipients' bodies. In this study, the feasibility of the biovalve as an aortic valve was evaluated in a goat model. Biovalves were prepared by 2-month embedding of the molds, assembled using two types of specially designed plastic rods, in the dorsal subcutaneous spaces of goats.

3D spheroid culture of hESC/hiPSC-derived hepatocyte-like cells for drug toxicity testing.

Although it is expected that hepatocyte-like cells differentiated from human embryonic stem (ES) cells or induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells will be utilized in drug toxicity testing, the actual applicability of hepatocyte-like cells in this context has not been well examined so far. To generate mature hepatocyte-like cells that would be applicable for drug toxicity testing, we established a hepatocyte differentiation method that employs not only stage-specific transient overexpression of hepatocyte-related transcription factors but also a three-dimensional spheroid culture system using a Nanopillar Plate. We succeeded in establishing protocol that could generate more matured hepatocyte-like cells than our previous protocol.

Trends of gender gaps in life expectancy in Japan, 1947-2010: associations with gender mortality ratio and a social development index.

Aim: This study analyzed the trend of gender gaps in life expectancy (GGLE) in Japan between 1947 and 2010, and explored the correlations of GGLE with gender mortality ratio and social development indices.

Methods: Using GGLE and social indices data collected from the official websites, we carried out trends analysis of GGLE by calculating segmented average growth rates for different periods. We explored the association between GGLE and all-cause mortality; and between GGLE and Human Development Index (HDI) while controlling for time trend, by computing the generalized additive models based on the software R (version 2.

Influence of parasitic capacitance on output voltage for series-connected thin-film piezoelectric devices.

Series-connected thin film piezoelectric elements can generate large output voltages. The output voltage ideally is proportional to the number of connections. However, parasitic capacitances formed by the insulation layers and derived from peripheral circuitry degrade the output voltage.

Religious leaders as potential advocates for HIV/AIDS prevention among the general population in Sri Lanka.

Religious leaders in Sri Lanka may have a high potential of contributing to HIV/AIDS prevention among the general public because of their social status. In order to assess their current HIV/AIDS-related knowledge and attitude and the possibility of becoming community advocates of HIV/AIDS prevention, we conducted a questionnaire survey among Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Christian leaders in Sri Lanka in 2009. There were limited correct responses about HIV/AIDS-related knowledge and attitudes toward people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV), and information regarding condoms, HIV testing and counselling were poorly understood.

There is great interest in tumor stem cells (TSCs) as potential therapeutic targets; however, cancer therapies targeting TSCs are limited. Studies of physician-nurse relationships have focused mainly on nurses' perceptions. Few studies have explored physicians' perceptions and related factors. This study had two aims: to describe physicians' perceptions of physician-nurse collaboration in Japan by focusing on attitudes toward collaboration and collaborative practice and to examine the effect of physicians' experiences related to collaboration on their perceptions of collaboration.

Leptospira infection at the University of Peradeniya Teaching Hospital, Sri Lanka: clinical and laboratory investigations.

To help formulate a local intervention for leptospirosis in Sri Lanka, we determined the serogroups of leptospiral species among 97 patients diagnosed with leptospirosis at the University of Peradeniya Teaching Hospital, Sri Lanka. Ninety-two point eight percent of the patients were men; nearly two-thirds were > or = 35 years old; the majority had secondary or higher education level, half were farmers or laborers; and 57.7% presented in the acute-phase of the illness.

Carrier status of leptospirosis among cattle in Sri Lanka: a zoonotic threat to public health.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease of global importance and one of the notifiable diseases in Sri Lanka. Recent studies on human leptospirosis have suggested that the cattle could be one of the important reservoirs for human infection in the country. However, there is a dearth of local information on bovine leptospirosis, including its implications for human transmission.

Phylogeny of halictine bees supports a shared origin of eusociality for Halictus and Lasioglossum (Apoidea: Anthophila: Halictidae).

The halictid bees are excellent models for the study of social evolution because greater social diversity and plasticity are observed in the tribe Halictini than in any other comparable taxonomic group. We examine the evolutionary relationships within the subfamily Halictinae ("sweat bees") to investigate the origins of social behaviour within the tribe Halictini. We present a new phylogeny of the subfamily Halictinae based on three nuclear genes (elongation factor-1 alpha, wingless, and long-wavelength rhodopsin) and one mitochondrial gene (cytochrome c oxidase 1) sequenced for 206 halictine bees.

Paclitaxel-based chemotherapy for aggressive kaposiform hemangioendothelioma of the temporomastoid region: Case report and review of the literature.

Background: Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a rare vascular tumor of infancy and childhood. This tumor results in poor prognosis, and therefore, development of a more effective treatment is needed.

Methods And Results: We describe an 11-year-old boy presenting with left facial palsy caused by aggressive KHE of the left temporomastoid region.

The role of CXCR3 and CXCR4 in colorectal cancer metastasis.

Chemokines and their receptors play key roles in leukocyte trafficking and are also implicated in cancer metastasis. We previously demonstrated that forced expression of CXCR3 promotes colon cancer metastasis preferentially to the draining lymph nodes (LNs), with poor prognosis. Using clinical colorectal cancer (CRC) samples, here, we show that expressions of CXCR3 and CXCR4 are significantly higher in metastatic foci within LNs and liver compared to primary tumors, whereas ligands for CXCR3 and CXCR4 are not.

Single amino acid mutation in an ATP-binding cassette transporter gene causes resistance to Bt toxin Cry1Ab in the silkworm, Bombyx mori.

Bt toxins derived from the arthropod bacterial pathogen Bacillus thuringiensis are widely used for insect control as insecticides or in transgenic crops. Bt resistance has been found in field populations of several lepidopteran pests and in laboratory strains selected with Bt toxin. Widespread planting of crops expressing Bt toxins has raised concerns about the potential increase of resistance mutations in targeted insects.
