This study compared two biotrickling filter packing materials for hydrogen sulfide removal. Inlet HS concentrations and empty-bed retention time were tested on the two biotrickling filters. First reactor (BT1) had immobilized sulfur-oxidizing bacteria on commercial moving-bed media, whereas second reactor (BT2) had sulfur-oxidizing bacteria on sugarcane bagasse.

Article Synopsis
  • Hydrogen sulfide (HS) in sewer systems poses risks to public health and the environment due to its corrosive nature, odor, and potential toxicity.
  • Researchers explored conductive concrete made from amorphous carbon and aimed to develop new materials to reduce HS levels.
  • The study found that electricity-producing bacteria (EPB) could effectively decrease HS concentration and that newly developed conductive concrete materials surpassed traditional options in their effectiveness at biological oxidation of HS.

Biogas production of palm oil mill effluent (POME) and empty fruit bunches (EFB) was performed by coupled liquid (L-AD) and solid-state (SS-AD) anaerobic digestion processes. POME was fed to L-AD digester, while mixed of effluent from L-AD and EFB was fed to SS-AD digester. The maximum overall methane production of 60.
