The present study describes a novel antimicrobial mechanism based on Sodium Orthovanadate (SOV), an alkaline phosphatase inhibitor. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were employed to examine the surface morphologies of the test organism, Escherichia coli (E. coli), during various antibacterial phases.

In this work, Sulfur and Nitrogen co-doped carbon nanoparticles (SN-CNPs) were synthesized by hydrothermal method using dried beet powder as the carbon source. TEM and AFM images indicated that these SN-CNPs form a round-shape ball with an approximate diameter of 50 nm. The presence of Sulfur and Nitrogen in these carbon-based nanoparticles was confirmed by FTIR and XPS analyses.

The global pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) caused a threat to public health and a worldwide crisis. This raised the need for quick, effective, and sensitive detection tools to prevent the rapid transmission rate of the infection. Therefore, this study aimed to develop an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)-based aptasensor employing an interdigitated gold electrode (IDE) to detect SARS-CoV-2 Spike (S) glycoprotein and viral particles.

A combination therapy of (RP) with goji () has earned a long history in the prescriptions to promote male health. However, the mechanisms at both molecular and nanoscale quantum levels are unclear. Here, we found that processed RP extract induces apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in cancer cells, thereby inhibiting prostate cancer cell proliferation enhanced by processed goji extract associated with an augment of the nanoscale herbzyme of phosphatase.

Elevated levels of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) are associated with bone metastasis, liver cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, and many other diseases or stem cell marker. It is therefore of great significance to quantitatively detect the ALP levels by a rapid, highly sensitive, and easy-to-use strip paper test. In the present work, we discovered an enhancement of ALP activity upon the addition of cauliflower-derived carbon dots (CFCDs), which can be applied as a sensor for ALP.

Processed herbs have been widely used in eastern and western medicine; however, the mechanism of their medicinal effects has not yet been revealed. It is commonly believed that a central role is played by chemically active molecules produced by the herbs' metabolism. In this work, processed rhizoma polygonati (RP) and other herbal foods are shown to exhibit intrinsic phosphatase-like (PL) activity bounded with the formation of nano-size flower-shaped assembly.

Chemically modified metal surfaces have been used to recognize and capture specific cell types and biomolecules. In this work, stainless steel wires were functionalized with aptamers against breast cancer stem cell markers. Stainless steel wires were first electropolished and silanized via electrodeposition.

This work presents experimental results on detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis secreted protein MPT64 using an interdigitated electrode (IDE) which acts as a platform for capturing an immunogenic protein and an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) as a detection technique. The assay involves a special receptor, single stranded DNA (ssDNA) aptamer, which specifically recognizes MPT64 protein. The ssDNA immobilization on IDE was based on a co-adsorbent immobilization at an optimized ratio of a 1/100 HS-(CH)-OP(O)O-(CHCHO)-5'-TTTTT-aptamer-3'/6-mercaptohexanol.

Carbon nanodots (C-dots) are emerging as a new type of promising agent in anticancer, imaging, and new energy. Reports as well as the previous research indicate that certain C-dots can enhance targeted cancer therapy. However, in-depth mechanisms for such anticancer effect remain unclear.

This paper presents the results of a systematic study of helium swelling and the subsequent process of degradation of the near-surface layer of aluminum-based nitride ceramics. The samples were irradiated with 40 keV He ions at temperatures of 300 and 1000 K with a fluence of 1 × 10-5 × 10 ions/cm. The choice of radiation doses and temperature conditions was due to the possibility of simulating reactor tests of structural materials.

Magnetic Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (NPs) and their surface modification with therapeutic substances are of great interest, especially drug delivery for cancer therapy, including boron-neutron capture therapy (BNCT). In this paper, we present the results of boron-rich compound (carborane borate) attachment to previously aminated by (3-aminopropyl)-trimethoxysilane (APTMS) iron oxide NPs. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with Attenuated total reflectance accessory (ATR-FTIR) and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis confirmed the change of the element content of NPs after modification and formation of new bonds between Fe₃O₄ NPs and the attached molecules.

Etched fiber Bragg grating (EFBG)-based sensors are used as evanescent field sensors for refractive index detection. When the fiber thickness is thin and the refractive index sensitivity increases, the number of propagating modes increases, resulting in a spectral enlargement that complicates the interrogation of the sensor. In this work, we present a method to analyze the spectrum of a multimode etched fiber Bragg grating (MMEFBG) in the wavelet domain, which analyzes the amount of spectral density independently from the peak reflectivity value.

A biosensor based on an etched Fiber Bragg Grating (EFBG) for thrombin detection is reported. The sensing system is based on a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) with a Bragg wavelength of 1550 nm, wet-etched in hydrofluoric acid (HF) for ~27 min, to achieve sensitivity to a refractive index (RI) of 17.4 nm/RIU (refractive index unit).

We demonstrate and experimentally validate a fiber optic refractive index (RI) sensor obtained by simply etching a high-scattering MgO-based nanoparticle-doped single-mode fiber in hydrofluoric acid (HF). The fiber has 32.3 dB stronger Rayleigh scattering than a standard fiber, allowing a detection of scattering spectral signatures with an optical backscatter reflectometer, even when the core is exposed to the outer RI.

In this work, a partially etched chirped fiber Bragg grating (pECFBG) is introduced, as a compact sensor for multi-parametric measurement of temperature, thermal gradients over the active length, and refractive index. The sensor is fabricated by wet-etching a portion of a 14-mm linearly chirped FBG with linear chirp profile. The resulting device has two active areas: the unetched part of the grating (2 mm) can be used either as a uniform temperature sensor, or to detect thermal gradients experienced through the grating length by means of a spectral reconstruction technique; the etched part (12 mm), besides having a similar thermal sensitivity, is exposed to refractive index sensing through the introduction of a sensitivity to external refractive index.
