The benefits of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) for patients with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) in first complete remission (CR1) have mostly been evaluated in younger patients. Although favorable outcomes of allo-HCT over chemotherapy have been reported with the use of reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC) regimens in elderly patients with AML in CR1, information is still limited, especially on the effects of cytogenetic risks and donor sources. We collected data from AML patients aged 50 to 70 years who achieved CR1, and compared the outcome in 152 patients who underwent allo-HCT in CR1 (HCT group) to that in 884 patients who were treated with chemotherapy (CTx group).

Background: Patients with acute myeloid leukemia who are treated with conventional chemotherapy still have a substantial risk of relapse; the prognostic factors and optimal treatments after relapse have not been fully established. We, therefore, retrospectively analyzed data from patients with acute myeloid leukemia who had achieved first complete remission to assess their prognosis after first relapse.

We retrospectively surveyed patients who received a second transplantation for graft failure (GF) after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (SCT) in hospitals participating in the Kanto Study Group for Cell Therapy. A second SCT was performed in 21 of 45 patients with primary GF and in 13 of 15 with secondary GF. The median time between the first and second SCT was 49 days (range, 18-1204 days).

Line profiles of rovibrational transitions of CO embedded in p-H(2) crystals were studied by high resolution midinfrared diode laser spectroscopy. The line profile analysis for the R(0)(parallel), R(0)(perpendicular), P(1)(parallel), and P(1)(perpendicular) transitions shows that spectral line shapes are well reproduced by a convolution of Gaussian and Lorentzian functions. The temperature dependence of the Lorentzian Gamma(L)(T) and Gaussian widths Gamma(G)(T) shows that there is a nonzero linewidth contribution to each at the T = 0 K limit.

This paper proposes a new technique for reducing the patient dose when employing medical radiographs prepared by using screen-film systems. In this technique the patient dose can be reduced by employing scattered X-rays in order to obtain the same film density as that realized without the use of scattered X-rays. The minimum perceptible thickness difference ΔX(min), which can be recognized by liminal vision, was psychophysically calculated by considering the energy spectrum of incident X-ray, sensitivity spectrum of the screen layer, and the perception capability of human vision.

We observed the mature granulocytes/monocytes derived from leukemic cells in patients with acute myeloid leukemia who present mixed lineage leukemia gene (MLL). Morphologic observation and fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis (FISH) for chromosome 11q23 abnormality were studied, and a multiplex reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis was done to identify the fusion partners with MLL. The bone marrow cells with FISH signals of MLL showed the cell differentiation of the myeloid and/or monocytic lineages in 4 of 6 AML patients.

Fourteen patients who received allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) from a serologically HLA one mismatched related donor (MMRD) between November 1987 and July 2003, were compared with HSCT from matched sibling donor (MSD) (n=142) or matched unrelated donor (MUD) (n=78). Cumulative incidence of acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in patients with MMRD was significantly higher than in those with MSD, but was not different from that in those with MUD. There was no difference in the incidence of extensive type chronic GVHD in HSCT according to donor type.

Percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty (PTRA) with stenting has been effective in the control of hypertension, renal function and pulmonary edema caused by atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis (ARAS). To examine the functional significance and detailed morphological characteristics of starvation-induced autophagy in the adult heart, we starved green fluorescent protein (GFP)-microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3) transgenic mice for up to 3 days. Electron microscopy revealed that, after as little as 12 hours of starvation, round and homogenously electron-dense lipid droplet-like vacuoles appeared in cardiomyocytes. These were determined to be lysosomes based on cathepsin D immunopositivity and acid phosphatase activity.
