Article Synopsis
  • Mirtazapine, when combined with granisetron and dexamethasone, was studied for preventing nausea and vomiting caused by carboplatin in patients with thoracic cancers.
  • A trial involving 52 patients showed high rates of complete response—83.3% during the delayed phase (24-120 hours) and 100% in the acute phase (0-24 hours)—with minimal side effects.
  • Results suggest that this three-drug combination is effective and safe for patients undergoing chemotherapy with carboplatin at specified dosages.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study examined the effectiveness of bowel ultrasonography as a non-invasive method to monitor ulcerative colitis (UC) activity and predict clinical response to treatment.
  • - Researchers analyzed data from 100 patients undergoing induction therapy, finding that changes in rectal bowel wall thickness within the first week were significant predictors of remission by week 8.
  • - The results suggest that early improvements in bowel wall thickness can help inform treatment decisions for patients with UC, potentially leading to better outcomes.

Background: Transabdominal ultrasound is useful to assess inflammation in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC); however, the assessment of the rectum is challenging and a barrier for its widespread use.

Aim: To evaluate if transperineal ultrasound is useful for predicting endoscopic and histological findings of the rectum in UC.

Methods: Fifty-three consecutive adults with UC who required colonoscopy were included and transperineal ultrasound was performed in combination with transabdominal ultrasound within a week before or after colonoscopy with rectal biopsy.
