Article Synopsis
  • - This study explores the link between retinal vascular area (VAFP) and arterial stiffness, measured by brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), using a deep-learning algorithm on retinal photos from 372 individuals.
  • - Results show that both total arteriolar area (AA) and total venular area (VA) are negatively correlated with baPWV, indicating that larger retinal vessel areas may be associated with lower arterial stiffness.
  • - The findings suggest that retinal vessel measurements could be used as a potential biomarker for assessing systemic arterial stiffness, establishing a significant relationship between retinal images and cardiovascular health.

Article Synopsis
  • Acrolein is a reactive compound that affects cellular functions and is linked to glial cell migration in conditions like diabetic retinopathy.
  • The study focused on how acrolein influences retinal glial cell migration through rho-associated coiled-coil-containing protein kinases (ROCKs), particularly ROCK1.
  • Results showed that acrolein stimulates ROCK1 expression and its activation, leading to increased glial cell migration, which can be reduced by the ROCK inhibitor ripasudil.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in human intraocular lymphoma (IOL).
  • Two enucleated eyes and seven cell-block samples from IOL patients were examined, focusing on MMP-2, MMP-9, and TIMP-4 expressions.
  • Results showed varied expression levels of these proteins in primary and secondary IOL cases, indicating that MMPs may significantly contribute to the development of IOL.

Article Synopsis
  • A novel deep learning algorithm was developed to evaluate retinal vessel changes due to hypertension by analyzing fundus photographs from over 5,500 health-check participants.
  • The study involved automatic extraction and categorization of retinal arterioles and venules, measuring their areas, and correlating these with age and blood pressure.
  • Results showed significant correlations between the areas of arterioles and venules, with both areas negatively correlating with age and blood pressure, suggesting the algorithm could serve as a new indicator of hypertension-related vascular changes.

Background: Hematologic malignancies occasionally cause serous retinal detachment (SRD); however, its pathogenesis remains unclear. Here we present the imaging characteristics of metastatic choroidal lymphoma masquerading as Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease.

Case Presentation: A 45-year-old Japanese woman was referred to our clinic because of bilateral SRD with blurred vision.

Background: To examine the clinical features of radiation cataract in patients with ocular adnexal mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma.

Methods: Twenty-one patients with 26 eyes diagnosed with ocular adnexal MALT lymphoma (26 eyes), who were treated in Hokkaido University Hospital, were retrospectively reviewed based on medical records.

Results: Out of the 21 patients, 16 patients (21 eyes) received radiation therapy (RT) with a total dose of 30 Gy.
