Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the effects of fingolimod (FTY720), an S1PR modulator, on salt-induced kidney damage in rats, comparing groups treated with or without DOCA.
  • The DOCA+FTY720 group experienced significantly worse outcomes, including reduced survival, severe hypertension, and kidney cell injury, unlike the control group.
  • Results indicate that FTY720 may exacerbate kidney issues in the presence of salt and DOCA, suggesting caution when prescribing this medication.

Article Synopsis
  • A case study is presented of a patient with hepatitis B virus (HBV) who developed type II mixed cryoglobulinemia, leading to skin issues and kidney disease.
  • The patient's skin symptoms improved alongside lower levels of cryoglobulin and HBV after treatment with oral entecavir and plasmapheresis.
  • Ultimately, the patient needed prednisolone due to insufficient response from initial treatments, raising concerns about steroid use in similar cases complicated by HBV.

Article Synopsis
  • A 17-year-old male experienced high plasma creatinine levels and low urine output four weeks after injuring his knee.
  • A kidney biopsy revealed diffuse endocapillary proliferative glomerulonephritis linked to a post-streptococcal infection, leading to acute kidney injury and nephrotic syndrome.
  • The patient's kidney function and protein levels improved with supportive care like hemodialysis, without the need for immunosuppressive treatment.

We herein report the case of a 75-year-old man who developed an increased serum creatinine level (4.93 mg/dL) and oliguria with massive proteinuria (7.14 g/day) on the second day after a single oral administration of high-dose (56 mg) minodronate.

Article Synopsis
  • Klotho is a protein linked to aging, and this study aimed to explore its levels in relation to kidney function in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients.
  • Researchers analyzed serum and urine samples from 131 CKD patients using a specific testing method, discovering a wide range in urinary Klotho excretion and serum levels.
  • Findings showed that urinary Klotho levels (rather than serum levels) were significantly associated with kidney function, indicating that urinary Klotho may better reflect the number of functioning nephrons in CKD patients.

We herein present a case of serial opportunistic infections that included disseminated nocardiosis and cryptococcal meningitis in a 67-year-old man who was diagnosed with ANCA-associated vasculitis and treated with corticosteroids. Upon admission, the initial manifestations of the disease included subcutaneous tumors and multiple lesions in the brain and lungs. Nocardia farcinica was identified in a culture of the aspirated pus.

We describe a case of an adult female who presented with nephrotic syndrome. She was diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus with serum antinuclear antibodies, leucopenia with lymphopenia, butterfly erythema, and nephrotic syndrome. Renal biopsy revealed normal glomeruli with diffuse effacement of the foot processes, consistent with lupus podocytopathy.
