A detailed paleomagnetic study conducted in the Sangiran area, Java, has provided a reliable age constraint on hominid fossil-bearing formations. A reverse-to-normal polarity transition marks a 7-m thick section across the Upper Tuff in the Bapang Formation. The transition has three short reversal episodes and is overlain by a thick normal polarity magnetozone that was fission-track dated to the Brunhes chron.

Peroral direct cholangioscopy (PDCS) is endoscopic method for diagnosis in the common bile duct (CBD) utilizing an ultra-slim upper endoscope. Frogs ingest little water orally, but absorb the majority of the water needed for normal physiological performance through a specific region of the ventral skin, the pelvic patch. We observed non-stimulated (basal water absorption, BWA) water flux through the isolated pelvic patch in vitro in Japanese tree frog (Hyla japonica). We found that water flux through non-stimulated skin from the pelvic patch was greater in males than females.

In most amphibians, [Arg(8)] vasotocin (VT) has an antidiuretic effect that is coupled to the activation of adenylate cyclase. In contrast, mesotocin (MT) has a diuretic effect and acts via the inositol phosphate/calcium signaling pathway in amphibians. To further clarify the mechanisms of VT and MT activation, we report the molecular cloning of a VT receptor (VTR) and a MT receptor (MTR) from the Japanese tree frog, Hyla japonica.

A 56-year-old woman, who had been suffering from idiopathic cold agglutinin disease and treated unsuccessfully with prednisolone and cyclosporine A for 6 months, was referred to our hospital in November 1998. She was given methylprednisolone pulse therapy followed by low-dose cyclophosphamide, but her anemia did not improve. We then began administration of intermittent high-dose cyclophosphamide (1,200 mg/day, every 4 weeks), and this resulted in a dramatic increase of her hemoglobin level and improvement of her symptoms.

Human subjects can volitionally control discharge frequencies of isolated motor units at several frequencies. If the tonic firing rates such as 10 Hz are mainly dependent on the gamma-loop and if Xylocaine blocks gamma-fibers before blocking alpha-fibers, application of Xylocaine would preferentially disturb the tonic rates. After application of Xylocaine to the nerve innervating the motor units the tonic discharges at 10 Hz became irregular, while the phasic discharges at 1 Hz could still be performed volitionally.

Irreversible proliferation and cornification of the mouse vaginal epithelium were induced by 10 daily injections of 20μg estradiol-17β starting on the day of birth. Development of the irreversible vaginal epithelium during the period of estrogen injections in early postnatal life was observed under light and electron microscopes. Small electron-dense cells (A-cells) in clusters were present in the columnar vaginal epithelium of newborn mice.
