Osseointegration is essential for successful implant treatment. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we focused on decorin (DCN), which was hypothesized to be present in the proteoglycan (PG) layer at the interface between bone and the titanium oxide (TiOx) surface.

Dental Suction Interference and Acoustic Respiratory Monitoring.

Objective: Previous studies have reported that the noise generated by dental equipment can interfere with the auscultation of respiratory sounds during sedation. Therefore, this study aimed to identify whether positing the acoustic sensor on the chest or cervical position would be least susceptible to interference from dental suction device noise, a prominent noise noted during respiratory sound monitoring during dental sedation.

Pathological multifocality is not a prognosis factor of papillary thyroid carcinoma: a single-center, retrospective study.

Introduction: Non-total thyroidectomy (non-TTx) is a widely accepted operative procedure for low-risk papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). PTC patients preoperatively diagnosed with unifocal disease are often revealed as having multifocal foci by microscopy. The present study determined whether or not patients with clinically unifocal, but pathologically multifocal non-high-risk PTC treated with non-TTx have an increased risk of a poor prognosis compared to those with pathologically unifocal PTC.

Papillary thyroid microcarcinoma with multiple pulmonary metastases following lung cancer surgery: a case report.

Background: Distant metastasis is extremely rare for papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) without lymph node metastasis or extrathyroidal extension, for which active surveillance (AS) is indicated. The evaluation of distant metastases in low-risk PTMC is controversial. A case of PTMC in which AS would have been performed if chest CT and lung surgery had not been performed is reported.

U-shaped plastic optical fiber sensor for scale deposition in hot spring water.

Fiber optic sensors for monitoring scale deposition in geothermal brine and hot spring water should be safe, easily fabricated, and readily disposable. These desired features already have been enhanced in plastic optical fibers (POFs) and U-shaped sensors for other applications. The present work reports a U-shaped POF sensor for CaCO scale deposition.

Analgesia-based Sedation for Oral Surgery in Patients With Chronic Respiratory Obstructive Disease.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a risk factor for postoperative cardiovascular and respiratory complications. Thus, intravenous sedation can be a better option than general anesthesia for surgery in patients with severe COPD. Herein, we present 2 cases of analgesia-based sedation in patients with severe COPD who underwent oral surgery.

Breast metastasis from medullary thyroid carcinoma: a report of a case.

Background: Metastasis to the breast is rare. We herein report a patient with metastatic medullary thyroid carcinoma to the breast for whom measuring the calcitonin level was an important clue to the correct diagnosis.

Case Presentation: A 54-year-old woman visited our hospital for the treatment of recurrent metastatic medullary thyroid carcinoma due to multiple endocrine neoplasia 2A and breast cancer.

Effects of visual-motor illusion on functional connectivity during motor imagery.

This study aimed to verify whether visual-motor illusion changes the functional connectivity during kinesthetic motor imagery and the vividness of kinesthetic motor imagery. Twelve right-handed healthy adults participated in this study. All participants randomly performed both the illusion and observation conditions in 20 min, respectively.

Association between rs4149056 and tegafur-uracil-induced hepatic dysfunction in breast cancer.

The aim of this study was to identify pharmacogenomic biomarkers to predict tegafur-uracil (UFT)-induced liver dysfunction.  A total of 68 patients, who were administered UFT, were evaluated using a two-step pharmacogenomics analysis. The first screening revealed the association between five SNPs and UFT-induced hepatic dysfunction.

Kaempferol-immobilized titanium dioxide promotes formation of new bone: effects of loading methods on bone marrow stromal cell differentiation in vivo and in vitro.

Efficacy of lapatinib monotherapy on occult breast cancer presenting with cutaneous metastases: A case report.

The case of a 72-year-old female who identified a lymph node enlargement in the left axilla is reported in the present study. A lymph node biopsy revealed a metastatic adenocarcinoma of the axillary lymph node. Following various assessments, the patient was diagnosed with occult breast cancer and lymph node metastases, for which treatment was initiated.

The use of a Mitsunobu reagent for the formation of heterocycles: a simple method for the preparation of 3-alkyl-5-aryl-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2(3H)-ones from carboxylic acids.

The reaction of carboxylic acids with Mitsunobu reagents, prepared by the reaction of triphenylphosphine with dialkyl azodicarboxylates, followed by heating at 180-190 °C under solvent-free conditions, afforded 3-alkyl-5-aryl-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2(3H)-ones. This facile and convenient method readily provides the 1,3,4-oxadiazolone ring systems in good yields using a one-pot protocol starting from the corresponding carboxylic acids. It was also demonstrated that the presence of a catalytic base facilitates the final ring closure forming the 1,3,4-oxadiazol-2(3H)-one.

Effects of concentration and temperature on SDS monolayers at the air-solution interface studied by infrared external reflection spectroscopy.

Infrared external reflection (IER) spectra of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) monolayers at the air-solution interface and infrared transmission spectra of the corresponding aqueous solutions were measured at various SDS concentrations and temperatures. A comparison between the spectra of adsorbed monolayers and bulk solutions revealed that the conformational order of the SDS alkyl-chain at the air-solution interface improved with increasing the SDS concentrations, up until the saturation adsorption, and that the conformational order of the adsorbed SDS monolayer was higher than those of monomers and micelles. In addition, below the Krafft point temperature, the adsorbed SDS was maintained in the liquid crystal state, while SDS in the bulk solution was in the crystalline state.

DT-diaphorase-like quinone reductase in rat plasma.

The present study provides the evidence that DT-diaphorase-like quinone reductase exists in rat plasma. The quinone reductase activity toward menadione was found in rat plasma in the presence of NADH or NADPH. The enzyme activity was induced by pretreatment with 3-methylcholanthrene, but was not affected by phenobarbital.
