Drought is one of the major abiotic stresses that affect plant growth and productivity, and plant stress responses are affected by both the intensity of stress and genotype. In Iraqi Kurdistan, tomato plants play a significant role in the country's economy. Due to climate change, which causes soil moisture to diminish, the crop's growth and yield have been dropping in recent years.

Article Synopsis
  • Cadmium (Cd) is highly toxic to all life forms and negatively affects the growth of plants, including tomatoes, prompting research on its impact and potential remedies using oak leaf biomass.
  • The study involved exposing two tomato genotypes resistant to Cd and two that were sensitive to different soil treatments with and without sodium hydroxide (NaOH) oak leaf biomass.
  • Results showed that the presence of oak biomass significantly improved tomato growth metrics like root and shoot lengths as well as fruit weights, with the tolerant genotypes showing the most benefits, particularly in terms of biochemical parameters under cadmium stress.
